A Literary Tour De France written by Robert Darnton and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-01 with History categories.

The publishing industry in France in the years before the Revolution was a lively and sometimes rough-and-tumble affair, as publishers and printers scrambled to deal with (and if possible evade) shifting censorship laws and tax regulations, in order to cater to a reading public's appetite for books of all kinds, from the famous Encyclopédie, repository of reason and knowledge, to scandal-mongering libel and pornography. Historian and librarian Robert Darnton uses his exclusive access to a trove of documents-letters and documents from authors, publishers, printers, paper millers, type founders, ink manufacturers, smugglers, wagon drivers, warehousemen, and accountants-involving a publishing house in the Swiss town of Neuchatel to bring this world to life. Like other places on the periphery of France, Switzerland was a hotbed of piracy, carefully monitoring the demand for certain kinds of books and finding ways of fulfilling it. Focusing in particular on the diary of Jean-François Favarger, a traveling sales rep for a Swiss firm whose 1778 voyage, on horseback and on foot, around France to visit bookstores and renew accounts forms the spine of this story, Darnton reveals not only how the industry worked and which titles were in greatest demand, but the human scale of its operations. A Literary Tour de France is literally that. Darnton captures the hustle, picaresque comedy, and occasional risk of Favarger's travels in the service of books, and in the process offers an engaging, immersive, and unforgettable narrative of book culture at a critical moment in France's history.

How The Bible Became Holy written by Michael L Satlow and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-15 with Religion categories.

In this sweeping narrative, Michael Satlow tells the fascinating story of how an ancient collection of obscure Israelite writings became the founding texts of both Judaism and Christianity, considered holy by followers of each faith. Drawing on cutting-edge historical and archeological research, he traces the story of how, when, and why Jews and Christians gradually granted authority to texts that had long lay dormant in a dusty temple archive. The Bible, Satlow maintains, was not the consecrated book it is now until quite late in its history. He describes how elite scribes in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C.E. began the process that led to the creation of several of our biblical texts. It was not until these were translated into Greek in Egypt in the second century B.C.E., however, that some Jews began to see them as culturally authoritative, comparable to Homer’s works in contemporary Greek society. Then, in the first century B.C.E. in Israel, political machinations resulted in the Sadducees assigning legal power to the writings. We see how the world Jesus was born into was largely biblically illiterate and how he knew very little about the texts upon which his apostles would base his spiritual leadership. Synthesizing an enormous body of scholarly work, Satlow’s groundbreaking study offers provocative new assertions about commonly accepted interpretations of biblical history as well as a unique window into how two of the world’s great faiths came into being.

In 1913, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) experienced an episode of psychosis, seeing visions and hearing voices in what he called a horrible 'confrontation with the unconscious.' But, instead of seeking to minimize the hallucinations after this initial episode, Jung believed there was tremendous value in this unconscious content and developed methods to encourage hallucinations. Over some sixteen years, he recorded his experiences in a series of small journals, which he later transcribed in a large, red, leather-bound volume, commonly known as 'The Red Book'. Jung never published the Liber Novus, as he called this pivotal part of his oeuvre, and left no instructions for its final disposition, and it therefore remained unpublished until recently. 'The Red Book Hours' complements the facsimile edition and English-language translation of 'The Red Book', published in 2009, and draws out the insights into Jung's affinity with art as a means of personal insight.

Lucifer S Banker written by BRADLEY. BIRKENFELD and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10 with Banks and banking categories.

In January 2010, Bradley C. Birkenfeld, an internationally-successful banker from suburban Boston, entered the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility, where he was cuffed, processed, and issued standard prison garb. Nearly three years later, soon after being released, he was issued a United States government check from the Internal Revenue Service for $75 million. Why? With Lucifer's Banker, Birkenfeld reveals how he became the single most important whistleblower in financial history. Birkenfeld exposed-and finally helped bring down-the Swiss banking system that allowed plutocrats, drug lords, art collectors, politicians, terrorists, and hundreds of thousands of dishonest rich people to conceal and grow their wealth. In the United States alone, Birkenfeld assisted the Treasury in recovering over $10 billion in back taxes, fines, and penalties from Americans who had been cheating the IRS by hiding cash, gold, silver, and other precious metals, artwork, antiques, and a range of valuable assets in the secret underground vaults of Swiss accounts-including those of his employer, UBS, then the largest bank in the world. Part Wolf of Wall Street, part Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Lucifer's Banker is a dramatic, entertaining, and enraging expose of international fraud, financial scandal, wild parties, high-stakes espionage, and the ongoing collusion between our government and some of the wealthiest people in the world.
