A riveting story of dislocation, survival, and the power of stories to break or save us When Clemantine Wamariya was six years old, her world was torn apart. She didn't know why her parents began talking in whispers, or why her neighbours started disappearing, or why she could hear distant thunder even when the skies were clear. As the Rwandan civil war raged, Clemantine and her sister Claire were forced to flee their home. They ran for hours, then walked for days, not towards anything, just away. they sought refuge where they could find it, and escaped when refuge became imprisonment. Together, they experienced the best and the worst of humanity. After spending six years seeking refuge in eight different countries, Clemantine and Claire were granted refugee status in America and began a new journey. Honest, life-affirming and searingly profound, this is the story of a girl's struggle to remake her life and create new stories - without forgetting the old ones. ____________________________________ 'Extraordinary and heartrending. Wamariya is as fiercely talented as she is courageous' JUNOT DIAZ, author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao 'Brilliant ... has captivated me for a couple of years' SELMA BLAIR

But not Eva's. Her parents run a hugely successful blog, Happily Eva After - and Eva is the star of the show. But Eva is getting sick of being made to pose in stupid mum-and-daughter matching outfits for sponsored posts. The freebies aren't worth the teasing at school. As addictive and intoxicating as the perfect martini. Don't start reading unless you have cancelled all your plans.' - Sarah Bailey, author of The Dark Lake and Where the Dead Go Identical twins only look the same ... Beautiful twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Cynical and insecure, Iris has long been envious of open-hearted Summer's seemingly never-ending good fortune, including her perfect husband, Adam. Called to Thailand to help sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when she unexpectedly finds herself alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean, everything changes. Now is her chance to take what she's always wanted - the idyllic life she's always coveted. But just how far will she go to get the life she's dreamed about? And how will she make sure no one discovers the truth? Written with the chilling suspense of The Girl on the Train and Before I Go to Sleep, The Girl in the Mirror is an addictive thriller about greed, lust, secrets and deadly lies. 'Immensely entertaining, hugely original, highly recommended. Rose Carlyle takes the reader on a wild ride, across an ocean and into the depths of a family riven by greed, jealousy and subterfuge . . . Like sorbet for the jaded palates of hardcore thriller fans.' - Chris Hammer, author of Scrublands and Silver 'Ferociously entertaining. A novel like a triathlon: part evil-twin thriller, part howdunit (or did-she-do-it?), part juicy family drama. Drop Knives Out and Double Indemnity into the blender, shake some Dead Calm over the froth, power it on, and you've got a cocktail like The Girl in the Mirror - fresh, flavourful, and utterly intoxicating.' - A.J. Finn, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window 'A young woman tries to outrun the secrets that her own actions create. The thrill of the chase gathers us up and pulls us through each page to the very last. And in that other game of pursuit, the author matching wits with the reader, Rose Carlyle is always one step ahead. Of The Girl in the Mirror's many surprises, the biggest is that such an expert psychological thriller, such an addictive ride, could be a debut.' - Malcolm Knox, author of The Life and Bluebird 'Rose Carlyle's debut psychological suspense The Girl in the Mirror left me gobsmacked. With its exotic setting, incredibly drawn characters, masterfully intricate plot, and an ending I absolutely did not see coming, Carlyle doesn't just knock the ball out of the park-she sends it flying into the next universe. The Girl in the Mirror is a triumph, one of the best books I've read all year.' - Karen Dionne, bestselling author of The Marsh King's Daughter and The Wicked Sister 'A page-turner that's delightfully over-the-top, shocking, and full of twists, The Girl in the Mirror takes sibling rivalry to the next level. A jaw-dropping debut.' - Stephanie Wrobel, author of Darling Rose Gold 'Rose Carlyle's The Girl in the Mirror took my breath away, page after page. It has it all: A superbly taut plot. Unforgettable, haunting characters. A setting that will instantly transport you to the lush landscape of the Seychelles. And one of the best endings I've read in a very long time. Bottom line-this book is exactly what we're all craving right now: a delicious, perfect escape.' - Aimee Molloy, New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Mother 'Riveting from the first page to the last, with a final mind-blowing twist you'll never see coming!' - Liv Constantine, author of The Last Mrs Parrish

In recent decades, large-scale social changes have taken place in Europe. Ranging from neoliberal social policies to globalization and the growth of EU, these changes have significantly affected the conditions in which girls shape their lives. Living Like a Girl explores the relationship between changing social conditions and girls’ agency, with a particular focus on social services such as school programs and compulsory institutional care. The contributions in this collected volume seek to expand our understanding of contemporary European girlhood by demonstrating how social problems are managed in different cultural contexts, political and social systems.

From the Gibson Girl to the flapper, from the vamp to the New Woman, Carolyn Kitch traces mass media images of women to their historical roots on magazine covers, unveiling the origins of gender stereotypes in early-twentieth-century American culture. Kitch examines the years from 1895 to 1930 as a time when the first wave of feminism intersected with the rise of new technologies and media for the reproduction and dissemination of visual images. Access to suffrage, higher education, the professions, and contraception broadened women's opportunities, but the images found on magazine covers emphasized the role of women as consumers: suffrage was reduced to spending, sexuality to sexiness, and a collective women's movement to individual choices of personal style. In the 1920s, Kitch argues, the political prominence of the New Woman dissipated, but her visual image pervaded print media. With seventy-five photographs of cover art by the era's most popular illustrators, The Girl on the Magazine Cover shows how these images created a visual vocabulary for understanding femininity and masculinity, as well as class status. Through this iconic process, magazines helped set cultural norms for women, for men, and for what it meant to be an American, Kitch contends.
