Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts durchläuft der europäische Liebesdiskurs einen tiefgreifenden Wandel, der sich als Verbürgerlichung eines zuvor aristokratisch geprägten Schreibens über Liebe charakterisieren lässt. In den Gedichten der Leipziger, der Straßburger und der Frankfurter Jahre entfalten sich ebenso wie in den Texten der Weimarer Schaffensphasen immer neue Poetiken der Liebe, die mit zeitgenössischen Positionen von der Aufklärung bis zur Spätromantik konkurrieren. Als einzigartig erweisen sich hierbei Goethes Forminnovationen, die oftmals mit interkulturellen Referenzen einhergehen: Volkstümliches Liedgut, antike Verskunst und persische Liebesrhetorik bilden beziehungsreiche Konfigurationen, die in der Lyrik des 19. und 20.
