While an individual referring to themselves in the third person may sound unusual, this phenomenon (known as illeism) is consistently and extensively reflected in the direct speech of both Jesus and Yahweh. This in turn raises various questions: why are Jesus and Yahweh presented as speaking in such a manner? Who else employs illeism in the Bible? Does it occur in the Ancient Near Eastern texts, and, if so, who utilises it? And lastly, is there a relationship between the illeism as used by Yahweh, and the illeism as used by Jesus? Elledge addresses an issue in Biblical texts often neglects by scholarship: conducting an extensive survey of the use of illeism in the Bible and the Ancient Near Eastern Texts, and presenting evidence that this phenomenon, as used by Jesus, reflects both royal and divine themes that are apparent across several different religions and cultures. In 1714, the 29 year-old Johann Sebastian Bach was promoted to the position of concertmaster at the ducal court of Weimar. This post required him for the first time in his already established career to produce a regular stream of church cantatas-one cantata every four weeks. Among the most significant works of this period is Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis in meinem Herzen (Cantata 21). Generally known in English as "I had much affliction," Cantata 21 draws from several psalms and the Book of Revelations and offers a depiction of the spiritual ascent of the soul from intense tribulation to joy and exaltation. Although widely performed and loved by musicians, Cantata 21 has endured much criticism from scholars and critics who claim that the piece lacks organizational clarity and stylistic coherence. Adrio Kšnig is among those theologians in South Africa who are attempting to break away from a traditional fundamentalist approach to the Bible typical of an older Dutch generation raised on the Neo-Calvinism of Abraham Kuyper. This younger generation of Reformed theologians from South Africa wants to make use of a far wider theological spectrum than merely the Netherlands. This book, focusing on the doctrine of God, is an excellent example of contemporary theological thinking by an outstanding member of this generation. Kšnig strongly asserts that his book is unlike most doctrines of God in that it is not about God-in-himself as is most scholastic and classical Protestant theology, but rather about God in certain relationships: While God does exist over and above his relationships and his actions and is thus more and greater than his deeds and relationships . . . it is only through his deeds and relationships that we know God. Kšnig goes on to explore specifically four relationships--God to the gods, God to man, God to history, and God to the future.
