Der Sinn des Unterrichtsthemas liegt darin begründet, dass die SuS im Alltagsgebrauch mit dem Passiv konfrontiert werden und den sprachlichen Gebrauch daher beherrschen sollten. Häufig findet man das Passiv in schriftlicher Form vor, zum Beispiel in Gebrauchsanweisungen, Kochrezepten, fachwissenschaftlichen oder Zeitungstexten, aber auch in der Schulordnung . Der Passivgebrauch ist eine sehr sachliche Form von Sprache, bei dem nicht eine handelnde Person im Vordergrund steht, sondern ein Sache an sich. Vergegenwärtigt sich dieser Aspekt bei SuS, wird es ihnen künftig leichter fallen, Anwendungsbereiche für den richtigen Gebrauch zu finden, was sich letztlich in der Qualität ihrer Sprache und ihres Sprachverständnisses wiederspiegelt. Den SuS soll der unterschiedliche Sprachgebrauch zwischen dem Aktiv und dem Passiv bewusst werden, um bei gegebenen Schreibanlässen, aber auch in der Alltagssprache richtige Verwendung dafür zu finden. Es geht darum, sich mit einem sprachlichen Thema genau auseinanderzusetzen und den alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch nicht als reinen Automatismus zu betrachten. Die SuS werden für die Bildung der deutschen Sprache sowie ihre Funktionen sensibilisiert und gelangen zu einem Verständnis dafür, warum man überhaupt Unterscheidungen zwischen verschiedenen grammatischen Satzstrukturen wie dem Aktiv und dem Passiv vornimmt.
