A PRINT magazine and Design Observer Best Book of the Year The first English translation of a famous 1972 debate between Dutch graphic designers Wim Crouwel and Jan van Toorn, a public clash of subjectivity versus objectivity at Amsterdam’s Museum Fodor that helped set the stage for bold philosophical showdowns to come in design culture. Held in response to an exhibition of Van Toorn’s work at Stedelijk Museum, including student posters protesting the Vietnam War—in an era of youth culture and increasing resistance to authority, capitalism, and the power of media—the stakes were aesthetic, ethical, and politically charged. Crouwel defended his approach of neutrality and austere rationalism, attention to typography and worksmanship, and professionalism in service of the client’s message. Van Toorn argued for his use of chaos, collage, and photographs of everyday life; that a designer’s ideas, personality, and political commitments are integral to the work. Dialogue on The Debate has reverberated in graphic design circles for the four decades since, and it is often referenced in modern design criticism as a key marker for the philosophical positions that continue to define the profession. The first English transcript of this key event in design history will allow a contemporary audience to discover the ongoing relevance of The Debate in an increasingly complex visual culture. Along with the transcript, this pocket-sized clothbound book contains a foreword by prominent design critic Rick Poynor, and essays from Dutch design historian Frederike Huygen, who discusses the historical context of the debate, and curator Dingenus van de Vrie, who looks more closely at these two giants’ different perspectives on graphic design. A color gallery juxtaposes a representative selection from the oeuvres of Crouwel and Van Toorn, including exhibition designs, calendars, posters, brochures, artist book designs, postal stamps, and fascinating works such as the script of a 1969 stage production based on a story by Jorge Luis Borges, sealed in a tin can, and a many-gatefolded catalog for Ed Ruscha’s “Dutch Details” at Groninger Museum.

The Moderns written by Steven Heller and has been published by Abrams this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-19 with Design categories.

In The Moderns, we meet the men and women who invented and shaped Midcentury Modern graphic design in America. The book is made up of generously illustrated profiles, many based on interviews, of more than 60 designers whose magazine, book, and record covers; advertisements and package designs; posters; and other projects created the visual aesthetics of postwar modernity. Some were émigrés from Europe; others were homegrown—all were intoxicated by elemental typography, primary colors, photography, and geometric or biomorphic forms. Some are well-known, others are honored in this volume for the first time, and together they comprised a movement that changed our design world.

The Computer In Graphic Design written by Ronald Labuz and has been published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Computers categories.

"This unique book documents the brief yet exciting history of the computer in graphic design and goes on to examine the work and working practices of designers who are leading the way in the use of this technology. As an alternative to design annuals, Ronald Labuz's The Computer in Graphic Design offers a serious examination of the nature of computer-generated graphic design and suggests to design professionals and students the unlimited possibilities this technology permits." "The book charts four distinct ways in which graphic designers have used computers over the past 15 years, including two visible methods ("primitive" and "sophisticated") and two invisible methods ("hidden" and "allusive"). The international group of graphic designers and design firms whose work is vividly and colorfully highlighted in the book reflect these differing philosophies. This original format allows for comparisons and contrasts and helps to frame the ongoing debate as to where computer graphic design is headed." "After an opening chapter on the evolution of computer design style. The Computer in Graphic Design focuses on those designers whose work has obviously been created by the computer, including such "new primitives" as Rudy VanderLans, Max Kisman, John Hersey, and Zuzana Licko. In the next section, the book details the work of designers who see technology as a participatory vehicle in high art and design. Topics here include the hybrid imagery of April Greiman, and the relationship of color value to the computer as mirrored in the work of Kazumasa Nagai." "Juxtaposed with these two related movements are those designers whose use of the computer is far less obvious. Members of one group, which includes such prominent designers as Nancy Skolos, Kenneth Hiebert, and Lance Hidy, take advantage of the computer's speed and control while forging individual styles that are not compromised by a reliance on new technology. The final group also uses the computer but, for individual reasons, does not allow it to visually emerge. Among the individuals and firms whose work is profiled here are Johnee Bee, Michael Weymouth Design, and IIT/Institute of Design." "The final section of The Computer in Graphic Design takes a look at today's typography and type design and the computer's impact on these fields, discusses the inevitable conflict between classicists of form and the advocates of primitive type design, and examines the radical changes that may come in the near future." "The Computer in Graphic Design is required reading - and viewing - for every professional and student excited by the possibilities of the collaboration between the graphic designer and the computer. The book will help readers resolve how they will use the computer in their own designs, taking their cue from the work and actual words of the diverse designers presented. This unique volume will also prompt readers to explore for themselves whether technology is little more than a tool to make production easier or faster or whether it will forever change the practice of graphic design."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Variations On A Rectangle written by DJ Stout and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-01 with Design categories.

“Editorial design is the art of storytelling, and DJ’s brand of it is uniquely American. Western American. It starts out slow and builds. It wins you with a bit of humility (almost ‘shucks-gee-whiz’) and then comes back at you with a surprise punch. The pacing and analogies feel like a Will Rogers narrative. . . . When he first began presenting his work to his London Pentagram partners, they thought he could have just as easily been from the moon. But the storytelling was so strong, so funny, so completely designed but guileless at the same time that the Londoners, and the rest of us, found ourselves confronted with something real, authoritative, and probably definable only as pure American Graphic Design.” —Paula Scher, from the introduction An internationally renowned graphic designer and partner in Pentagram, the world’s most famous graphic design firm, DJ Stout is a fifth-generation Texan whose strong sense of place has inspired his design work for over thirty-five years. His contributions to Texas Monthly, where he was art director for thirteen years, helped the magazine win three National Magazine Awards. American Photo magazine named Stout one of its “100 Most Important People in Photography,” and I.D. (International Design) magazine selected him for “The I.D. Fifty,” its annual listing of design innovators. The Society of Illustrators honored Stout with the national Richard Gangel Art Director Award, and he was made a Fellow of the Austin chapter of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) for his lifetime achievements. Variations on a Rectangle presents both a career retrospective of DJ Stout’s work and his inimitable, often humorous perspectives on publication design. Using nearly eight hundred images to illustrate more than two hundred fifty major design projects, Stout describes the inspiration and creative process behind his highly innovative designs for magazines, books, brochures, posters, and even a fiberglass “batcow.” He tells fascinating, behind-the-scenes stories of Texas personalities such as Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, and Ann Richards, who figured prominently in Texas Monthly’s pages, while also discussing how his Texas heritage has influenced his more recent design work US and international clients. An essential primer for younger graphic designers and a revelation for everyone who values exceptional design, Variations on a Rectangle proves Stout’s maxim, “A publication without style is just a document, and documents don’t do well on the newsstand. And that’s why you need editorial art directors. Amen.”
