Die Absicht der hier vorgelegten Abhandlung ist, einen der wesentlichsten Abschnitte der antiken Geschichte, den Aufstieg Roms zur Weltmacht, nach dem ihm angemessenen Maßstabe historisch-kritisch zu untersuchen. Das bedeutet, die Vorgänge nicht in erster Linie formaljuristisch, sondern poli tisch zu sehen und zu beurteilen, handelt es sich doch um ein eminent poli tisches Geschehen, nicht um einen Abschnitt der Rechtsgeschichte. Wenn die Ergebnisse, zu ,denen der Verfasser gelangt ist, von der zur Zeit weithin geltenden Beurteilung abweichen, so war dafür nicht der Wunsch ma߭ gebend, "der herrschenden Ansicht um des Widerspruchs willen zu wider sprechen, eine Haltung, die für Außenseiter charakteristisch ist", wie H. G. Güterbock kürzlich treffend gesagt hat (Orientalist. Literaturzeitg. 1956, Sp. 520). Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung war vielmehr die Frage, ob die Divergenz der Urteile vieler moderner Forscher und unseres bedeutendsten Quellenautors, des Polybios, wirklich in der Hauptsache zu Lasten des Griechen und seiner angeblichen Voreingenommenheit geht. Die Entwick lung, die zur Errichtung der römischen Weltherrschaft führte, wurde dies mal-wie der Titel zum Ausdruck bringt - bewußt nicht vom Standpunkt Roms aus betrachtet, sondern von den Verhältnissen der hellenistischen Welt, namentlich Griechenlands, her gesehen, die die Voraussetzung für Roms Aufstieg und damit auch für ein gerechtes Urteil über ihn bilden.

Der erste Teil der Arbeit befasst sich mit dem reinen chronologisch-historischem Kontext, beginnend mehrere Jahrzehnte vor der Geburt des Aristoteles' bis zum Tod des Alexander, damit ein gewisser historischer Rahmen gegeben ist. Dabei wird auf die damalige Staatenwelt eingegangen und wichtige geschichtliche Begebenheiten erwähnt und erläutert, die die damalige griechische Welt prägten. Eine komplette Darstellung und eine lückenlose Bearbeitung ist auf Grund der Kürze der Arbeit leider nicht möglich. Deswegen werden ausgewählte Schwerpunkte den historischen Kontext darstellen. Im zweiten Teil wird versucht näher auf die Begebenheiten im Leben und die Philosophie des Aristoteles einzugehen, wobei seine Hauptthesen nur angeschnitten und in kompakter Form wiedergegeben werden. Die für diese Zeit gebräuchliche Begriffe, Abkürzungen und Bezeichnungen werden in den Fußnoten erläutert.

A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1869 "Die Geburt der Tragödie" / The Birth of Tragedy. The original German follows the English translation for reference. This is volume 1 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. The Birth of Tragedy has two different subtitles from two editions both published by Nietzsche; the first was "from the spirit of music" and the second "Hellenism or Pessimism". Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics. For as much as he criticized German Critical and Idealistic Philosophy of German, he shared an unwavering admiration for the Greek Philosophers, nearly to the point of worship.
