Healing practices in Mesoamerica span a wide range, from traditional folk medicine with roots reaching back into the prehispanic era to westernized biomedicine. These sometimes cooperating, sometimes competing practices have attracted attention from researchers and the public alike, as interest in alternative medicine and holistic healing continues to grow. Responding to this interest, the essays in this book offer a comprehensive, state-of-the-art survey of Mesoamerican healers and medical practices in Mexico and Guatemala. The first two essays describe the work of prehispanic and colonial healers and show how their roles changed over time. The remaining essays look at contemporary healers, including bonesetters, curers, midwives, nurses, physicians, social workers, and spiritualists. Using a variety of theoretical approaches, the authors examine such topics as the intersection of gender and curing, the recruitment of healers and their training, healers' compensation and workload, types of illnesses treated and recommended treatments, conceptual models used in diagnosis and treatment, and the relationships among healers and between indigenous healers and medical and political authorities.

Bribes, Bullets, and Intimidation is the first book to examine drug trafficking through Central America and the efforts of foreign and domestic law enforcement officials to counter it. Leonardo da Vinci, the eminent Renaissance scholar and philosopher said, "water is the driver of nature". Many may have considered it to be an overstatement in the past, but at the beginning of the third millennium, no sane individual would disagree with Leonardo's view. Water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource for most of the world's citizens. The current trends indicate that the overall situation is likely to deteriorate further, at least for the next two decades, unless the water profession eschews its existing "business as usual" practices, which can only allow incremental changes to occur. Somewhat surprisingly, the water profession as a whole neither realised nor appreciated the gravity of the global water situation as late as 1990, even though a few serious scholars have been pointing out the increasing criticality of the situation from around 1982. For example, the seriousness of the crisis was not a major issue, either at the International Conference on W ater and the Environment, which was organised by the UN system in Dublin and also at the UN Conference on Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro. Held in 1992, both are considered to be important events for the water sector of the past decade. It is now being increasingly recognised that the Dublin Conference was poorly planned and organised, and thus not surprisingly it produced very little, if any, worthwhile and lasting results.

Sobre la base de un razonamiento lógico, en el que el daño ambiental debe ser ante todo prevenido, las normas ambientales en Colombia se han centrado en atender a ese propósito y poco han hecho para garantizar una reparación efectiva de un gran número de daños que no logran prevenirse. El ya bien estructurado régimen de responsabilidad extracontractual, no necesariamente se constituye en una garantía de certidumbre jurídica para atender a las particularidades que tales daños revisten. Cuando estas normas se han ocupado del tema del daño, han sido equívocas en la determinación de aspectos tales como los presupuestos de responsabilidad, el alcance de la reparación y las competencias para hacerla exigible. Todo ello compromete la integridad del ambiente y la responsabilidad de un Estado que, al estar constitucionalmente obligado a protegerla. Esta obra propone advertir sobre las particularidades del daño ambiental puro respecto de otros generadores de responsabilidad extracontractual, la ausencia de un marco normativo que logre atender a esas particulares y demás dificultades que desde el punto de vista jurídico se presentan para lograr una reparación.
