Kallavesj-laulun kirjoittajan lähetystöneuvos Aaro J. Jalkasen (1875-1960) kirjoittamat runot viestivät meille hänen rikkaasta ja värikkäästä elämästään yli puolen vuosisadan ajalta. Runot ovat kulttuurihistoriallisestikin merkittävä kokoelma. Niissä hän ylistää lempiaiheitaan isänmaata, kotiseutua, rakkautta ja uskoa. Aaro J. Jalkanen syntyi Savossa, Rautalammilla ja kävi koulua Kuopiossa. Jo koulupoikana hän kirjoitti ensimmäisen runonsa ja jatkoi niiden kirjoittelua värikkään elämänsä viime vuosiin asti. Erityisen rakkaita aiheita hänelle ovat olleet kotimaan luonto sekä kotimaa. Kuopion kotiseutulaulu "Kallavesj, Kallavesj"on tunnetuin hänen kirjoittamistaan runoista ja sen kunniaksi pystytettiin, Aaro J. Jalkasen muistomerkki vuonna 1980. Kesällä 2016 julkaistiin postimerkki laulun täyttäessä 100-vuotta.
