1. The increasing number of research papers appeared in the last years that either make use of aggregation functions or contribute to its theoretieal study asses its growing importance in the field of Fuzzy Logie and in others where uncertainty and imprecision play a relevant role. Since these papers are pub lished in many journals, few books and several proceedings of conferences, books on aggregation are partieularly welcome. To my knowledge, "Agrega tion Operators. New Trends and Applications" is the first book aiming at generality , and I take it as a honour to write this Foreword in response to the gentle demand of its editors, Radko Mesiar, Tomasa Calvo and Gaspar Mayor. My pleasure also derives from the fact that twenty years aga I was one of the first Spaniards interested in the study of aggregation functions, and this book includes work by several Spanish authors. The book contains nice and relevant original papers, authored by some of the most outstanding researchers in the field, and since it can serve, as the editors point out in the Preface, as a small handbook on aggregation, the book is very useful for those entering the subject for the first time. The book also contains apart dealing with potential areas of application, so it can be helpful in gaining insight on the future developments.

Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. For example, difference operators are nothing but convolution operators with almost periodic symbols: the operator defined by (A

Seismic Safety Guide written by Donald G. Eagling and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Author Donald Eagling writes: "Often the process of studying the seismology of an area, selecting design earthquakes, and developing priorities and analysis techniques becomes so complex and bound up with sophistication that the (seismic) program's practical objectives are lost in the cracks between experts." How true! As a person who has been part of the earthquake engineering profession for over 40 years I have observed the rapid growth of sophisticated earthquake engineering analysis and design practices. As a former educator I applaud the great progress brought about by this thrust. Sophisticated "state of the art" analyses accomplished with understanding have brought about better earthquake resistive construction and have the potential to continue to do so. However, it is my personal opinion that the complexities of today's most advanced analytical techniques have outstripped the capabilities of the majority of structural engineering's practitioners. While many can manipulate the mathematics, most do not understand the results in physical terms. Over the last few decades public debate about the safety of nuclear facilities has intensified this problem. In the eyes of many, the potential intervenor is "demon god," and to appease this "god" an even increasing complexity of investigations, analyses and design practices have been served to it in the name of increased safety. Various proposals for appeasement have been to no avail. Opposing arguments have always favored more sophisticated and costly engineering practices and usually more studies have been required. Too often the result has been to put off relatively simple solutions to seismic problems. Where new construction is involved, costs increase with time but the hazard does not. Where existing poor construction is involved, hazards as well as costs grow with time. When the mitigation of serious seismic hazards is delayed by overly sophisticated reviews or studies, the practical objectives of seismic safety are simply not realized in timely way. During these times when socio-political issues often dominate public discussion of seismic safety, it is more important than ever to move ahead with practical and corrective action where the consequences of damaging earthquakes can be serious. The authors of this Seismic Safety Guide represent a cross section of the earthquake engineering profession, from state of the art to practitioner. I recommend their counsel in the chapters that follow for a practical course to seismic safety. Karl V. Steinbrugge

Singular And Degenerate Cauchy Problems written by and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1977-01-13 with Mathematics categories.

In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation; methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; and methods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particular branches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation, - Non-Lagrange interpolation, - Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform - Generalised low-rank matrix approximation - Optimal data compression - Optimal nonlinear filtering

Obesity Treatment written by David B. Allison and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Treatment outcome has certainly improved since Stunkard and McLaren-Hume (1959) reviewed the literature and found that less than 25% of obese patients lost 20 pounds or more and less than 5% lost 40 pounds or more. However, one of the few points on which almost all obesity researchers agree is that to date, our results are quite modest and we are generally unsuccessful in promoting effective weight maintenance among obese persons. As the title of a more recent article, "Improving long-term weight loss: Pushing the limits of treatment," (Brownell & Jeffrey, 1987, [emphasis added]) suggests, many believe that we have pushed our current treatment paradigms to the limit. It was with this background in mind that we organized the meeting from which these proceedings issue. The purpose of the three day international meeting was to evaluate the current knowledge base and conceptual paradigms of obesity treatment and to suggest directions for future research and clinical practice. Rather than simply for research reporting, the meeting was primarily for research generation. All speakers were established scientists in the field who were asked to summarize our state of knowledge in a given area rather than present the results of their latest research. Great efforts were taken to ensure that panel discussions occupied a central portion of the conference, and that the questions "What else do we need to know?" and "How do we find it out?" were consistently addressed.

Over the last 50 years the theory of p-adic differential equations has grown into an active area of research in its own right, and has important applications to number theory and to computer science. This book, the first comprehensive and unified introduction to the subject, improves and simplifies existing results as well as including original material. Based on a course given by the author at MIT, this modern treatment is accessible to graduate students and researchers. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter to help the reader review the material, and the author also provides detailed references to the literature to aid further study.
