In Brussels, the need for affordable and middle-income housing is entangled with the necessity to reduce the environmental impact of housing. The current climatological and health crises demand us to improve the resilience of our human habitat in the city. In planning and developing new collective housing projects, private and public developers alike are struggling to find the right answer to these questions. 0In this book,we present a research that identifies mismatches between housing preferences and housing offer. These mismatches are affected by the design of collective housing projects and by how they are produced. By confronting the Brussels' examples with cases from Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Hamburg we identify alternative design and organisation strategies. 00The cases offer examples to design collective and circulation spaces that mitigate privacy issues and allow multiple use, and show how residents and intermediaries in Baugruppen or cooperatives take responsibility in housing development, design, and management. 0The book concludes with a reflection of how these lessons learned could be implemented in Brussels' housing and urban planning policy. 00.

Across Europe, the number of co-housing initiatives is growing, and they are increasingly receiving attention from administrators and professionals who hold high expectations for urban liveability. Is co-housing a marginal idealist phenomenon, or the urban middle class’ answer to the current housing crisis? And has the development of theoretical insight and research kept up with the actual expansion of co-housing as a practice? These questions were raised during the first European conference on co-housing research, which took place in Tours, France, in March 2012. Both the conference and this book aim to move beyond case-studies, and to look more particularly at the implications and wider perspective of the current co-housing trend. Using the specific vocabulary of different disciplines and geographic regions, the contributions to this book analyse the underlying thinking behind, and the expectations projected on, diverse models of collaborative housing. The authors are aware of the qualities of contemporary co-housing, but they go beyond advocacy to investigate the conditions under which co-housing can be successful as a strategy for housing provision; can offer solutions for sustainable urban development; or indeed can contribute to involuntary or intentional gentrification. Pierre Lefèvre retrace ici l'histoire de l'habitat participatif depuis ses prémisses en 1973 jusqu'à la loi ALUR de 2014. Cet ancien architecte et enseignant chercheur à l'ENSA de Paris La Villette a été en effet un acteur majeur de ce type mal connu d'habitat : il a assisté à la naissance du mouvement de l'habitat groupé autogéré puis a pris part à de nombreux projets participatifs dans des domaines aussi divers que le logement social ou l'habitat du grand âge. Dernièrement, Pierre Lefèvre a participé au Grand Portail à Nanterre. Le livre s'achève sur l'énoncé de la problématique qui caractérise la face cachée de la loi ALUR, celle qui concerne l'habitat participatif et dont aucun média ne parle.
