Mit diesem Band erscheint zum 70. Todesjahr eines der zentralsten schriftstellerischen Projekte Wilhelm Kunzes (1902-1939). An Hermann Hesse, den eine langjährige, intensive Korrespondenz mit dem jungen Schriftsteller verbunden hatte, schrieb Kunzes Witwe über das Manuskript Heinrich von Ofterdingen: 'Sehr schmerzlich ist es, dass mein Mann eine Arbeit, die er seit vierzehn Jahren vorbereitet hat und die zur Niederschrift auf seinem Schreibtisch bereitliegt, im Stich hat lassen müssen.' Dass Kunze bis zu seinem frühen Tod an dem Romanvorhaben festhielt und arbeitete, macht den Text für die Erschliessung seiner schriftstellerischen Entwicklung unverzichtbar: Von seinem sprachgewaltigen, expressionistisch inspirierten Debüt (Der Tod des Dietrich Grabbe, Igel Verlag 2008) über seinen gesellschaftskritischen Roman Die Angstmühle (Igel Verlag 2004) findet er hier zu einem klassisch romantischen Erzählstoff und Ton. Viele der in diesem Band ebenfalls gesammelten Gedichte und Erzählminiaturen belegen Kunzes Tendenz, sich zunehmend in eine mystisch gefärbte Innerlichkeit zurückzuziehen. Es is ein wesentliches Merkmal des zu jung verstorbenen und zu Unrecht vergessenen Literaten, so verschiedene Pole in sich zu vereinen und mit immer gleicher stilistischer Brillanz und Intensität zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
