Primär wird dafür die Rezeption von Foucaults Heterotopie-Begriff in den Blick genommen, doch kommt die Autorin dabei nicht umhin, diese in einen größeren Kontext der allgemeinen Raumkonzepte Foucaults einzuordnen. Die Fragestellung dieser Hausarbeit ist, ob Foucaults Heterotopien (in ihren unterschiedlichen Ausführungen) feministisch gelesen und als Werkzeug zur Analyse geschlechtsspezifischer Orte in der Literatur genutzt werden können. Haben Foucaults Heterotopien einen Beitrag zur Forschung von Raum und Geschlecht geleistet? Werden sie es zukünftig noch tun? Um dies herauszustellen, wird zunächst in Foucaults Heterotopie-Begriff eingeführt. Am wichtigsten ist dabei der Text, auf den sich die Rezeption am meisten bezieht, nämlich "Von anderen Räumen". Daraufhin wird kurz auf die einschlägige Rezeption und das Problem des Missverstehens der Heterotopien Foucaults eingegangen. Schließlich kann dann der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob Foucaults Texte eine feministische oder geschlechtsspezifische Auslegung überhaupt hergeben und wenn ja, wie diese in der aktuellen Forschung zu Raum und Geschlecht aussieht oder aussehen kann.

Heterotopia, literally meaning ‘other place’, is a rich concept in urban design that describes a space that is on the margins of ordered or civil society, and one that possesses multiple, fragmented or even incompatible meanings. The term has had an impact on architectural and urban theory since it was coined by Foucault in the late 1960s but it has remained a source of confusion and debate since. Heterotopia and the City seeks to clarify this concept and investigates the heterotopias which exist throughout our contemporary world: in museums, theme parks, malls, holiday resorts, gated communities, wellness hotels and festival markets. With theoretical contributions on the concept of heterotopia, including a new translation of Foucault’s influential 1967 text, Of Other Space and essays by well-known scholars, the book comprises a series of critical case studies, from Beaubourg to Bilbao, which probe a range of (post)urban transformations and which redirect the debate on the privatization of public space. Wastelands and terrains vagues are studied in detail in a section on urban activism and transgression and the reader gets a glimpse of the extremes of our dualized, postcivil condition through case studies on Jakarta, Dubai, and Kinshasa. Heterotopia and the City provides a collective effort to reposition heterotopia as a crucial concept for contemporary urban theory. Viel hat sich seit Foucaults Lebzeiten verändert und die Welt, wie sie heute formiert ist, ist vor allem durch die neuen Kommunikationsmedien, eine grundlegend andere. Ich möchte untersuchen, ob das Konzept von Heterotopien noch sinnvoll auf eine Welt, in der der Raum als wirklichkeitskonstituierendes Maß in den Hintergrund tritt und sich digitale Gegenräume fortlaufend konstituieren und wieder zerfallen, anzuwenden ist. Diejenige Veränderung, die ich in den Fokus meiner Betrachtung stellen möchte, ist das Aufkommen des Internets. Ich werde versuchen, die Entwicklung um die, damit einhergehend veränderte, Kommunikation herumzuzeichnen. Dafür werde ich Niklas Luhmann zurate ziehen, welcher einen für mich fruchtbaren Blick auf die Co-Evolution von technischen Neuerungen unserer Kommunikationsmedien und die damit einhergehenden soziokulturellen Entwicklungen sozialer Systeme bietet. Um den Umfang der Hausarbeit nicht zu sprengen, werde ich Luhmanns Systemtheorie nicht als solche einführen, sondern mich auf jene Konzepte beschränken, die hier direkt eine Anwendung finden. Ein Phänomen, welches ich im Speziellen untersuchen möchte, sind die sogenannten "Echo Chambers" und "epistemic bubbles", die ich im Theorieteil erläutern werde.

Das Buch gibt eine ausführliche Einführung in Michel Foucaults Konzept der Heterotopien. Es zeigt auf, wie es genutzt werden kann, um „unauffällige“ Räume in der Gesellschaft und dahinter liegende Machtverhältnisse zu analysieren. In einer qualitativen Studie arbeiten die Autorinnen am Beispiel des Sozialraums Kleingarten mit Interviewanalysen heraus, dass Heterotopien Orte sind, die Widerlager innerhalb der Gesellschaft beherbergen. Diese Widerlager werden entweder zur Bekämpfung oder zur Kompensation strukturell verursachter sozialer Probleme in Anspruch genommen. Im Fallbeispiel werden soziale Missstände nicht bekämpft, sondern vielmehr zementiert.

The Badlands of Modernity offers a wide ranging and original interpretation of modernity as it emerged during the eighteenth century through an analysis of some of the most important social spaces. Drawing on Foucault's analysis of heterotopia, or spaces of alternate ordering, the book argues that modernity originates through an interplay between ideas of utopia and heterotopia and heterotopic spatial practice. The Palais Royal during the French Revolution, the masonic lodge and in its relationship to civil society and the public sphere and the early factories of the Industrial Revolution are all seen as heterotopia in which modern social ordering is developed. Rather than seeing modernity as being defined by a social order, the book argues that we need to take account of the processes and the ambiguous spaces in which they emerge, if we are to understand the character of modern societies. The book uses these historical examples to analyse contemporary questions about modernity and postmodernity, the character of social order and the significance of marginal space in relation to issues of order, transgression and resistance. It will be important reading for sociologists, geographers and social historians as well as anyone who has an interest in modern societies.
