Histoire d'une Grecque moderne is a masterpiece of ambiguity. Through the narrator's own bias and hypocrisy and through his "doubles" in the story who mirror or contrast with his character, Abbe Prevost deflates the patriarchal figures of eighteenth-century European society. The Oriental heroine's quest for intellectual and physical autonomy challenges such traditional authority figures as the aristocratic hero/narrator, the European imperialist, the "philosophe," and the writer who reflect Western sexual and cultural prejudices. Like the other novels of Prevost's 1740 trilogy (and even to a greater extent than in "Manon Lescaut"), "La Greque moderne" conveys a disturbing moral pessimism and indeterminancy that, in the end, the heroine's courage and determination cannot overcome. In an age of skepticism and increasing individualism, "La Greque moderne" seems to question the existence of any trustworthy model of moral authority.

« Papa, explique-moi donc à quoi sert l’histoire. » Ainsi un jeune garçon qui me touche de près interrogeait, il y a peu d’années, un père historien. Du livre qu’on va lire, j’aimerais pouvoir dire qu’il est ma réponse. Car je n’imagine pas, pour un écrivain, de plus belle louange que de savoir parler, du même ton, aux doctes et aux écoliers. Mais une simplicité si haute est le privilège de quelques rares élus. Du moins cette question d’un enfant — dont, sur le moment, je n’ai peut être pas trop bien réussi à satisfaire la soif de savoir — volontiers je la retiendrai ici comme épigraphe. D’aucuns en jugeront, sans doute, la formule naïve. Elle me semble au contraire parfaitement pertinente. Le problème qu’elle pose, avec l’embarrassante droiture de cet âge implacable, n’est rien de moins que celui de la légitimité de l’histoire. Voilà donc l’historien appelé à rendre ses comptes. Il ne s’y hasardera qu’avec un peu de tremblement intérieur : quel artisan, vieilli dans le métier, s’est jamais demandé, sans un pincement de cœur, s’il a fait de sa vie un sage emploi ? Mais le débat dépasse, de beaucoup, les petits scrupules d’une morale corporative. Notre civilisation occidentale tout entière y est intéressée.
