Many of our nation’s historical records reside in small historical societies, libraries, cultural organizations, houses of worship, and museums. The hard work of non-professional archivists is to thank for preserving much of our documentary heritage. Organizing Archival Records equips non-professional archivists with the skills to tackle one of the most challenging tasks of archiving: arranging and describing archival materials. "Not just a gift. It's history in the making. Family history is important. Photos, videos, aged documents, and cherished papers--these are the memories that you want to save. And they need a better home than a cardboard box. Creating Family Archives is a book written by an archivist for you, your family, and friends, taking you step-by-step through the process of arranging and preserving your own family archives. It's the first book of its kind offered to the public by the Society of American Archivists. Gathering up the boxes of photos and years of video is a big job. But this fascinating and instructional book will make it easier and, in the end, much better"--

Guide To Materials For The History Of The United States In The Principal Archives Of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Herbert Eugene Bolton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-10 with Reference categories.

Excerpt from Guide to Materials for the History of the United States in the Principal Archives of Mexico Mr. Bolton's book should be conceived of and judged as a part of a series, the sum total of which represents a systematic endeavor, by the Department of Historical Research of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, to make more available for students the materials for the history of the United States which are contained in foreign archives. In developing this systematic endeavor, the first step in the natural order, if one wishes to serve the interests of as large a number of historical scholars and societies as possible, is to make a general examination of each important foreign archive, and to present a general guide to the material which each is found to contain for the history of the United States. Of the series of manuals which the complete execution of such a project would require, the Institution has already published several: one for the Cuban archives, by Mr. Perez (1907); a brief one for Spain, by Professor Shepherd (1907); one for the archives of Great Britain, by Professor Andrews and Miss Davenport (1908), to be followed in the present year or in the year next succeeding by three other volumes, two of them prepared by Professor Andrews, and the other by Dr. Paullin and Mr. Paxson; a manual for the Roman and other Italian archives, by Professor Fish (1911); one for the German state archives, by Professor Learned (1912); and one for the Canadian archives, by Mr. Parker, to appear in 1913. The archives of Paris, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden are in the course of similar treatment. Opinions might differ as to the relative importance to American history of the deposits preserved in these various archives. It will not be disputed, however, that few if any of them have been so little explored by historical students in the United States as the archives of the republic next to the south of us; and this despite the long duration, the wide variety, and at times the high importance of our relations to that land. Accordingly the preparation of a Guide to Materials for the History of the United States in the Principal Archives of Mexico had a high place among the projects early contemplated by the department. The preparation of this guide by Professor Bolton has been embarrassed by numerous unexpected delays on his part and on that of the department, and for this the department may add its apologies and regrets to those which have been expressed by him. Yet it should be said that the delays have not prevented its having already served several investigators. The most extensive aid was that given from Mr. Bolton's notes to Mr. Irving B. Richman, in the preparation of his California under Spain and Mexico. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Much of our nation’s documentary heritage resides in small historical societies, libraries, cultural organizations, houses of worship, and museums. The preservation of this heritage often depends on the dedicated efforts of people who, in their workaday world, practice some profession other than archivist. For twenty five years, Organizing Archival Records has equipped non-professional archivists to tackle the challenging task of arranging and describing archival materials. The latest edition preserves the practical, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach of earlier editions while updating its content to reflect current archival practices: practical ways to arrange and describe digital records; simple tools you can use to manage and store your descriptions, whatever the level of your computer skills; how to share your descriptions with others; why provenance and original order are foundational to arrangement and description; how the principles codified in SAA’s Describing Archives: A Content Standard can guide your arrangement and description process; an expanded discussion of related topics, including appraisal, security, safe handling of records, storage conditions, and what to do with all the records that were in your archives before you read Organizing Archival Records.
