Im Mittelpunkt des Bandes steht mit den Décadas ein Schlüsseltext der frühneuzeitlichen kastilischen ‚Kolonialhistoriographie‘, der gleichwohl von der philologischen Forschung bisher kaum beachtet worden ist. Die sprachwissenschaftliche Diskursanalyse, der dieser Text unterzogen wird, versteht sich als pragmatisch orientierter Beitrag zur Geschichte des Spanischen in der Frühen Neuzeit und liefert eine historisch-systematisch fundierte Erklärung der sprachlichen Konstitution der Décadas, indem sie die Verfahren der Kompilation von Quellen, die für vormoderne Historiographie allgemein konstitutiv sind, erschließt und ihre Regularitäten für den konkreten Fall auf allen Ebenen der Sprachbeschreibung sichtbar macht. Dabei zeigt sich auch, dass die Entwicklung des Diskurses der Crónica Oficial de Indias im 16. Jahrhundert anders verläuft als es gängige humanistische Topoi von llaneza und naturalidad nahelegen. Da notwendig auch das Problem der sprachlichen Bedingtheit historischen Wissens und sein Zusammenhang mit der Frage nach Gattungen der Historiographie thematisiert wird, leistet die Arbeit darüber hinaus einen Beitrag zur Klärung der Frage nach dem – sprachlich-diskursiv zu begründenden – Status der Décadas als historischer Quelle und bietet Anknüpfungspunkte für den interdisziplinären Dialog mit der Geschichtswissenschaft.

When the Europeans first arrived in America, they had a number of preconceptions, prejudices, expectations and hopes about what life in the New World would be like. This book examines the different visions and representations of America conveyed in the writings of Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and the Pilgrim leader William Bradford, taking both writers within their respective literary and historical contexts. Anthologies of American literature have consistently ignored Spanish-language achievements on the grounds of a restrictive interpretation of American literature based on linguistic boundaries. Consequently, Spanish-language texts such as Cabeza de Vaca's or the account by the Hidalgo de Elvas, to name but two examples, have been marginalized in the narrative of American literary history. In seeking to redress this neglect, Galisteo contributes to scholarship which seeks to analyze Early America as a whole, including not only Anglo American perspectives but also the Spanish American aspect of the colonization process.
