Professor Rendtorff discusses the Old Testament in a way which sets his book apart from all other similar works by examining OT development from the earliest material to the books in their final form firmly within the history of Israel. The first part is in fact a critical evaluation of the problems of writing a history of Israel in those periods for which there is biblical evidence; the second part considers the various sociological settings which gave rise to the different genres and literary forms which make up the canon. The third part, which discusses the actual books of the canonical Old Testament, makes a close examination of the material of which they are composed and the history of their composition at the same time, though, under the impact of the arguments of Brevard Childs, it also considers the books in their final canonical form, and not only the books but the combinations of books as in the Pentateuch and the 'Deuteronomistic History Work'. Professor Rendtorf f's explanation of the relationship between these two complexes is particularly interesting. There are full bibliographies; the book also has a novel system of cross-referencing within the margins which makes it particularly easy to use.

This book brings solutions to a very great list of hitherto unsolved chronological and synchronisation problems. The reason why those solutions could be found lies in the extensive research the author made in old and often rare texts instead of limiting himself to the near exclusive source of the Bible. Ample use has been made of information that is available in works like the Books of Enoch, The Apocrypha, The Legends of the Jews, The Seder Olam, the Book of Jasher and many more, as well as in the texts from known historians like Herodotus and the famous Jewish historian and priest Flavius Josephus Just a few of the many special findings are: - The real reason why Joseph was so popular with the Pharaoh. - Sarah was not Abraham's (half)-sister. - Moses was uncircumcised and even forbade the ritual for 40 years. - Terah was not 70 years old when he begat Abraham. - The exact period of the Judges: when they started and when they ended. - A solution for the verse of the "about 450 years" of Paul's speech. - Why did the Lord God give form and then blew life into Adam? - Eve was not made out of Adam's rib but from another body part - A solution to the "impossible synchronism" of Judah and his sons. - Enoch made not one but 4 trips to Heaven. - The definitive answer: why did King Josiah attack Necho II? - Why did King Ahab not fight at Qarqar? And many more. The book has a unique style. It has nothing of the "study book", difficult to understand texts. The subject is serious, well researched, and treated with respect. But that does not mean that it cannot be presented at a fast moving pace, in easy to read style with here and there even a bit of humour. The purpose of the book is to prove that the promise that the Lord God made to Adam was kept. It held that there would be exactly 5500 years between the arrival of Adam in this world and the arrival of Christ. Every person who was of importance in that timespan has been visited. For every single one there are his years of birth and death or the years of his rule. Every person has a short story about some important part of his life, his actions or the influence he had on the history of the Hebrew people that lived in that period.

From the Old Testament it is immediately evident that the people of Israel had a clear notion of their presence in time and history. But though the ancient Hebrews thus stand out among their Semitic contemporaries, recent scholarship has been slow to pursue the clues the Old Testament provides to this. More than a century has passed since the publication of the only systematic study of the Hebrew language of time. Subsequent research and advances in methodology have made the time ripe for a new comprehensive survey of the rich Old Testament materials that bear on this question. That is the motivation for this exhaustive study of the relevant texts bearing on the critical Old Testament notions of "the day past," "the day present," and "the day future." Devoting long chapters to each of these three building blocks for the Old Testament view of time and history, Simon John DeVries follows a comprehensive methodology, which combines elements from several disciplines to arrive at a more rounded exegesis than would be possible along only one track. And, the author contends, exegesis, carefully done, is the only satisfactory way to analyze theological problems. For the Old Tesatment student there is here a wealth of interpretative material, data that may lead to revisions of current lexicographical ideas or alter contemporary notions of the formation of certain Old Testament books. The study of Old Testament eschatology is certain to be clarified by the information in this volume. It is Professor DeVries's intent, however, that Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow will find wide readership beyond the specialist in biblical exegesis and criticism. Systematic and speculative theologians will profit from the insights conveyed here, for the question of time -- and the existence of human beings in it -- is a question for all seasons, one to which the Hebrew religion surely makes a distinctive contribution. - Jacket flap.

This package contains all four books of An Introduction to the Old Testament set: An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, and An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, incredible events, amazing love stories, larger-than-life personalities and deep theological implications and themes are just part of the treasure that awaits readers. These books tell the story of the nation of Israel and the God who loves her, punishes her, and always brings this recalcitrant people back to Himself. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock, a noted Old Testament scholar, delves deep into the hearts of the five poetic books, offering readers helpful details such as hermeneutical considerations for each book, theological content and themes, detailed analysis of each book, and cultural perspectives. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock presents a clear picture of some of history's most profound spokesmen--the Old Testament prophets--and the God who shaped them. Our generational distance from the age of the prophets might seem to be a measureless chasm. Yet we dare not make the mistake of assuming that passing years have rendered irrelevant not only the Old Testament prophets, but also the God who comprehends, spans, and transcends all time. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch, Old Testament expert Herbert Wolf provides layreaders and scholars alike with a strong undergirding of understanding and knowledge in this introduction that reveals both the seriousness and excitement of the Pentateuch.

Palestine, when Abraham arrived there in response to God's command, was already an important land bridge which linked together the various cultural and political centers of the time. To the northwest was the ancient Hittite empire, and to the southwest lay the power of Egypt. Babylonia was located east and south of Palestine, while to the northeast were located most of the important cities in the Assyrian empire. The Israelites thus found themselves in a geographically strategic position in which it was impossible for them to remain isolated from their neighbors. Because of this geographic and political interdependence, the world of the Old Testament described in the Bible was coextensive with that of the ancient Near East, and the people and the times of the Old Testament cannot and must not be studied in isolation from the larger Near Eastern background. Whatever information can be discovered about the history, religion, languages, literatures, and cultures of the ancient Oriental peoples will necessarily have an important bearing upon our understanding of the people of God who were their contemporaries. Old Testament Times deals in an untechnical manner with the broad social and cultural context in which the events recorded in scripture took place. Particular attention has been given to the light that recent archaeological discoveries shed on the Old Testament narratives, and certain of the more problematic issues of Old Testament history have been examined in outline. Designed to complement Merrill Tenney's well-known New Testament Times, the present volume contains more than one hundred photographic illustrations, as well as helpful appendixes, indexes and a select list of books for further reading. - Jacket flap.
