Many of us dream of becoming published authors. We imagine how it would feel to hold our own book or see it on the shelf at our favorite bookstore. The good news is you can achieve your dream by writing about your hometown. You can chronicle your area's history. Write about a significant building or local celebrity. Zero in on an interesting neighborhood or time period. Publish a collection of ghost stories or share insider tips and recommendations in a travel book about your town or region. Hometown is a complete guide to writing and publishing a local interest book. Topics include choosing the right subject, scope and slant for your book; structuring your project so that you actually finish the manuscript; an honest comparison of traditional and self-publishing options; step-by-step instructions for publishing on Amazon; specific ways to capitalize on local authors' marketing advantages; how to establish your online presence; and how much you might realistically earn in your book's first year and beyond.

Hard Times in the Hometown tells the story of Kaminoseki, a small town on Japan’s Inland Sea. Once one of the most prosperous ports in the country, Kaminoseki fell into profound economic decline following Japan’s reengagement with the West in the late nineteenth century. Using a recently discovered archive and oral histories collected during his years of research in Kaminoseki, Martin Dusinberre reconstructs the lives of households and townspeople as they tried to make sense of their changing place in the world. In challenging the familiar story of modern Japanese growth, Dusinberre provides important new insights into how ordinary people shaped the development of the modern state. Chapters describe the role of local revolutionaries in the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the ways townspeople grasped opportunities to work overseas in the late nineteenth century, and the impact this pan-Pacific diaspora community had on Kaminoseki during the prewar decades. These histories amplify Dusinberre’s analysis of postwar rural decline—a phenomenon found not only in Japan but throughout the industrialized Western world. His account comes to a climax when, in the 1980s, the town’s councillors request the construction of a nuclear power station, unleashing a storm of protests from within the community. This ongoing nuclear dispute has particular resonance in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima crisis. Hard Times in the Hometown gives voice to personal histories otherwise lost in abandoned archives. By bringing to life the everyday landscape of Kaminoseki, this work offers readers a compelling story through which to better understand not only nineteenth- and twentieth-century Japan but also modern transformations more generally.

Home Town written by Tracy Kidder and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-05 with Social Science categories.

In this splendid book, one of America's masters of nonfiction takes us home--into Hometown, U.S.A., the town of Northampton, Massachusetts, and into the extraordinary, and the ordinary, lives that people live there. As Tracy Kidder reveals how, beneath its amiable surface, a small town is a place of startling complexity, he also explores what it takes to make a modern small city a success story. Weaving together compelling stories of individual lives, delving into a rich and varied past, moving among all the levels of Northampton's social hierarchy, Kidder reveals the sheer abundance of life contained within a town's narrow boundaries. Does the kind of small town that many Americans came from, and long for, still exist? Kidder says yes, although not quite in the form we may imagine. A book about civilization in microcosm, Home Town makes us marvel afresh at the wonder of individuality, creativity, and civic order--how a disparate group of individuals can find common cause and a code of values that transforms a place into a home. And this book makes you feel you live there.

Writing a book about your hometown will be the most frustrating writing project you will ever attempt, but it will also be the most rewarding-if you do it correctly. Do it wrong, though, and it will be one of your more humiliating experiences. This book is designed to show you how to get it right. Get it right and you will also make a decent profit. Hometown history authors reap the benefits both professionally and emotionally because they understand what it takes to make money as an author. But these writers are also recognized and respected authors in their hometowns-everyone knows who they are because they wrote their hometown's histories. Unless you are Stephen King or some other well-known fiction author, there is no better way to gain the respect of your family, friends, and neighbors. So if you are looking to further your career as a writer and put some money in your pocket, writing a hometown history is the best solution available. I have included a lot of topics and suggested that you dig deeply into many of those subjects. You should realize that these are just suggestions. You cannot include this entire list in your book. For a city of 20,000 residents, you would need a 10,000-page book, which is not reasonable or even possible. If you had time to do all that research, you could not afford to print the book. Certainly, no publisher would pay the cost of printing huge books for such a limited market (unless you could convince a publisher that you could get hundreds of dollars for each book). The purpose of this book is to give you ideas to work with. Pick and choose the topics that are important to your city. Ignore the rest. If your city is known as a medical city, then, by all means, delve deeply into the history and present-day activities of the medical community. You need to accentuate the positive. If a realtor sells you a house, she will point out all the great features of the house. If she mentions any of the bad features, she will simply gloss over those things. Your job as a city historian is to put your city's best face forward, not to point every little character flaw you have ever discovered-leave that to the news media.

Brown and Holley are interested in place and what makes people who they are. With particular interest in how people take the hand they’ve been dealt—fate, family, circumstance, luck—and craft a life for themselves, the authors celebrate the grit and gumption of these Texas originals. Introducing quirky characters and tenacious spirits, Holley’s stories seek out the personality of the small town while Brown’s photographs capture the essence of a changing landscape. Hometown Texas aims not to be nostalgic or sentimental but rather to show readers an unknown Texas—one that, while not vanishing, is certainly on the wane. Organized into five topographical, geographic, and cultural sections—East, West, North, South, and Central—three dozen stories and more than eighty complementary images work to create a parallel narrative to reveal what Brown has described as the “collective, various, remarkably complex soul that makes Texas unique.” Hometown Texas is an exploration across miles and cultures, of well-traveled roads and forgotten byways, deep into the heart of Texas.
