Nature, material and mental, knows no values. Yet it is evident that this alone does not mean that there are no values in reality, for it would be absurd to think that the system of objects which we call nature is the whole world of our life-experience. The fact that in physics and psychology a deliberate description and explanation of nature is going on, -does this not in itself involve the existence of an acting personality which, as such, can find no place in the system of nature?-from Science and IdealismAs a psychologist and an innovator of experimental psychology, Hugo M nsterberg was a powerful influence on thinking in both the medical and social arenas at the turn of the 20th century, developing practical applications of psychology to industry, medicine, education, the arts, and criminal investigation. Here, though, in this intriguing volume, M nsterberg discusses anxieties and misapprehensions that still afflict the scientific disciplines today.M nsterberg-in a transcription of an address given at Yale University in 1906-examines how a system that is "valueless" and orderly, like the methods of science, nevertheless does not negate the "chaos of experience" and feeling that characterizes human existence. No reliance upon science and technology, M nsterberg reassures us, can ever deny or lessen those qualities of our lives-morals, emotions, senses of beauty and justice-that we esteem most. Also available from Cosimo Classics: M nsterberg's The Eternal Life, Psychology and Life, Psychology and Social Sanity, The War and America, American Traits, and PsychotherapyOF INTEREST TO: readers of the philosophy of science, students of the culture wars

Shari Seidman Diamond Scholars interested in psychology and law are fond of c1aiming origins for psycholegal research that date back four score and three years ago to Hugo von Munsterberg's On the Witness Stand, published in 1908. These early roots can mislead the casual observer about the history of psychology and law. Vigorous and sustained research in the field is a recent phenomenon. It is only 15 years since the first review of psy chology and law appeared in the Annual Review of Psychology (Tapp, 1976). The following year saw the first issue of Law and Human Behavior, the official publication of the American Psychology-Law Society and now the journal of the American Psychological Associ ation's Division of Psychology and Law. Few psychology departments offered even a single course in psychology and law before 1973, while by 1982 1/4 of psychology graduate programs had at least one course, and a number had begun to offer forensic minors and/or joint J. D. / Ph. D. programs (Freeman & Roesch, see Chapter 28). Yet this short period of less than 20 years has seen a dramatic level of activity. Its strengths and weaknesses, excitements and disappointments, are aII captured in the collection of chapters published in this first Handbook of Psychology and Law. In describing what we have learned ab out psychology and law, the works included here also reveal the questions we have yet to answer and thus offer a blueprint for activities in the next 20 years.

Hugo Munsterburg was a pioneer of applied psychology. A long time professor of Harvard who struggled to separate his academic passions from his longing for his homeland in Germany, he created an inspirational storm in the quiet Boston town. This work is the combination of several articles previously published in journals and academic magazines where Munsterburg discusses the manifold psychological factors which impact on the outcome of a trial. Using this work, he illuminated a path for those of a rational or scientific bent to investigate the facts relayed by witnesses using experimental psychological methods and a background understanding of the western legal tradition. Amongst other pioneering work, he is one of the first to research the dynamics of a jury and its impact on judicial outcomes. In 'On the Witness Stand, Essays in Psychology and Crime', the author does not question only individuals but puts our whole set of assumptions about witness testimony on trial. In a way, heavily reminiscent of Cartesian doubt, Munsterburg questions whether two witnesses to the same crime would remember the same thing and if they initially remembered the same incident, would they continue to do so? Would they perceive the same incident to begin with or would they walk through similar but ultimately parallel worlds? In his search for the truth, Munsterburg goes so far as to describe his own faulty remembrances as a witness, making every attempt to deliver the truth in good faith. As a reader you will be gripped but made thrillingly uncertain about your perceptions, beliefs and memories. Take any memory and ask yourself, did it really happen that way? From Higher Aims To Hired Hands written by Rakesh Khurana and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-22 with Business & Economics categories.

Is management a profession? Should it be? Can it be? This major work of social and intellectual history reveals how such questions have driven business education and shaped American management and society for more than a century. The book is also a call for reform. Rakesh Khurana shows that university-based business schools were founded to train a professional class of managers in the mold of doctors and lawyers but have effectively retreated from that goal, leaving a gaping moral hole at the center of business education and perhaps in management itself. Khurana begins in the late nineteenth century, when members of an emerging managerial elite, seeking social status to match the wealth and power they had accrued, began working with major universities to establish graduate business education programs paralleling those for medicine and law. Constituting business as a profession, however, required codifying the knowledge relevant for practitioners and developing enforceable standards of conduct. Khurana, drawing on a rich set of archival material from business schools, foundations, and academic associations, traces how business educators confronted these challenges with varying strategies during the Progressive era and the Depression, the postwar boom years, and recent decades of freewheeling capitalism. Today, Khurana argues, business schools have largely capitulated in the battle for professionalism and have become merely purveyors of a product, the MBA, with students treated as consumers. Professional and moral ideals that once animated and inspired business schools have been conquered by a perspective that managers are merely agents of shareholders, beholden only to the cause of share profits. According to Khurana, we should not thus be surprised at the rise of corporate malfeasance. The time has come, he concludes, to rejuvenate intellectually and morally the training of our future business leaders.
