Joe grew up with an All-American work ethic that promised: if you rolled up your sleeves and worked hard, there was nothing you could not accomplish. The Constitution is one of the all-time greatest documents of all time but it did not make any promises that there would be no obstacles or pain along the road for your pursuit of that dream of happiness. Joe knew first hand what blood, sweat, and tears meant. He never looked for a participation trophy and realized, at a young age, that he was not entitled to anything he didn't work for. He was willing to go full bore towards his goals and meet obstacles head on, which never were in short supply. He never went out looking for trouble but it always managed to find him. Joseph Papp (1921-1991), theater producer, champion of human rights and of the First Amendment, founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival and Public Theater, changed the American cultural landscape. Born Yussel Papirofsky in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, he discovered Shakespeare in public school and first produced a show on an aircraft carrier during World War II. After a stint at the Actors’ Lab in Hollywood, he moved to New York, where he worked as a CBS stage manager during the golden age of television. He fought Parks Commissioner Robert Moses (as well as Mayors Wagner, Lindsay, Beame and Koch) winning first the right to stage free Shakespeare in New York’s Central Park, then municipal funding to keep it going. He built the Delacorte Theater and later rebuilt the former Astor Library on Lafayette Street, transforming it into the Public Theater. In addition to helping create an "American" style of Shakespeare, Papp pioneered colorblind casting and theater as a not-for-profit institution. There he learned how to become a boxer. Joe quit school in 1932 and became an amateur fighter. He won 50 of his 54 fights as an amateur. The book describes the successes and tribulations of Joe¿s career, esp. his defeat of German fighter Max Schmeling in 1938, with Europe on the brink of war. When American entered World War II, Joe Louis joined the army and raised America¿s spirits. After the war, he retired from boxing undefeated as world champion, but came back to fighting, until he lost to Rocky Marciano in 1951. He died on April 12, 1981. Juvenile Audiences.
