Tommaso Cava, ex militare dell'esercito napoletano, fu testimone di quegli avvenimenti e in questo pamphlet del 1863 analizza il fenomeno del brigantaggio politico per rivendicarne la legittimità e distinguerlo dai casi di delinquenza fine a sé stessa. Ne scaturisce un atto di accusa contro i liberali ottocenteschi, colpevoli, secondo l'autore, di avere sedotto e abbandonato un popolo, per poi calunniarne la reazione con l'infamante nome di brigantaggio.
