Uncle Champion was created one evening in 1980 while the author was running past Jean Gordon Grammar School located along his usual training route in Gentilly. The story was originally named For the Love of Sara. The title was chosen from the authors favorite song at the time. The original Uncle Champion creation was actually a combination of Uncle Champion I and Uncle Champion IV, but to follow the journey and fully understand the story, II and III were added and I and IV were split into two separate stories. The story begins with our runner, Christopher Uncle who decided to start running as a form of exercise. He was raised by a very good mother and father who taught him to always help others. While out training for the big race, his life and the lives of everyone involved changed. He found himself on a mission to save the life of an orphan named Julia. She is a very special and powerful young girl who leads the thirty-six other children of the orphanage beyond the fence. Chris meets Sara Harmony and discovers he needs her to get to Julia. He ends up saving both of them from their depressed state. At the end of each volume, a telegram arrives with Chris next clue to the ultimate riddle, the ultimate riddle from above. In Uncle Champion II Gentilly plays a major role. It is the location of the new and modern facility designed by Christopher. Uncle Champion was named by one of the children of the orphanage and was Chris celebrity name. All the way through Uncle Champion III you witness the relationship of Chris and Sara as it grows.

"The volume follows a dual track, represented by the written commentary of Dennis Sharp and of the author, which intersects with the dense sequence of images mounted in an arrangement that constantly moves on and around the theme of architecture lost in the contemporary metropolis." "The photographs cover the time span of the past twenty years, from Paolo Rosselli's early Indian travels exploring Chandigarh up to his more recent architectural inquiries, revealing a gradual evolution in his photographic vision and, more generally, the problematic course of contemporary photography."--BOOK JACKET.

As If God Existed written by Maurizio Viroli and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-09 with History categories.

Religion and liberty are often thought to be mutual enemies: if religion has a natural ally, it is authoritarianism--not republicanism or democracy. But in this book, Maurizio Viroli, a leading historian of republican political thought, challenges this conventional wisdom. He argues that political emancipation and the defense of political liberty have always required the self-sacrifice of people with religious sentiments and a religious devotion to liberty. This is particularly the case when liberty is threatened by authoritarianism: the staunchest defenders of liberty are those who feel a deeply religious commitment to it. Viroli makes his case by reconstructing, for the first time, the history of the Italian "religion of liberty," covering its entire span but focusing on three key examples of political emancipation: the free republics of the late Middle Ages, the Risorgimento of the nineteenth century, and the antifascist Resistenza of the twentieth century. In each example, Viroli shows, a religious spirit that regarded moral and political liberty as the highest goods of human life was fundamental to establishing and preserving liberty. He also shows that when this religious sentiment has been corrupted or suffocated, Italians have lost their liberty. This book makes a powerful and provocative contribution to today's debates about the compatibility of religion and republicanism.

Loco Motrix written by Amelia Rosselli and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03 with Literary Criticism categories.

A musician, musicologist, and self-defined “poet of research,” Amelia Rosselli (1930–96) was one of the most important poets to emerge from Europe in the aftermath of World War II. Following a childhood and adolescence spent in exile from Fascist Italy between France, England, and the United States, Rosselli was driven to express the hopes and devastations of the postwar epoch through her demanding and defamiliarizing lines. Rosselli’s trilingual body of work synthesizes a hybrid literary heritage stretching from Dante and the troubadours through Ezra Pound and John Berryman, in which playful inventions across Italian, English, and French coexist with unadorned social critique. In a period dominated by the confessional mode, Rosselli aspired to compose stanzas characterized by a new objectivity and collective orientation, “where the I is the public, where the I is things, where the I is the things that happen.” Having chosen Italy as an “ideal fatherland,” Rosselli wrote searching and often discomposing verse that redefined the domain of Italian poetics and, in the process, irrevocably changed the Italian language. This collection, the first to bring together a generous selection of her poems and prose in English and in translation, is enhanced by an extensive critical introduction and notes by translator Jennifer Scappettone. Equipping readers with the context for better apprehending Rosselli’s experimental approach to language, Locomotrix seeks to introduce English-language readers to the extraordinary career of this crucial, if still eclipsed, voice of the twentieth century.

The Money And The Power written by Sally Denton and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-30 with Business & Economics categories.

Sally Denton and Roger Morris make clear how and why Las Vegas became the greatest 'business success story' of the twentieth century, and how the rest of America ensured this success by contributing capital as well as customers. Headquarters of a trillion-dollar worldwide empire, the site of unprecedented political and economic power, Las Vegas is by no means an aberrant sin city. Denton and Morris demonstrate how it has grown out of, and reflects, a corruption and a worship of money that have crept into American life since Prohibition. They trace the original funds for the founding of the Las Vegas we know today to nationwide narcotics trafficking. They show how deeply a multiethnic criminal syndicate, in part feeding off gambling profits and the skim in Las Vegas, came to influence American politics and the larger society, and how pervasively its 'style of business' has penetrated the entire nation. Denton and Morris detail the amazing rise and reach of Meyer Lansky - the mind that ran the city; exactly how criminals, politicians, and businessmen worked together to control Las Vegas; the curious interplay of the city with the fates of Joseph, John F., and Robert Kennedy; how Mormon bankers and Wall Street financiers have bankrolled and profited from casinos ruled by organised crime; how a handful of dedicated journalists and law enforcement officers were destroyed before they could expose the city's secrets. The Money and the Power is a detailed and illuminating chronicle of an extraordinary place and time - and a provocative reinterpretation of twentieth-century American history.

Giovanna Silva Paolo Rosselli Islamabad Today written by Paolo Rosselli and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03 with Architecture categories.

In 1962, the architecture practice Ponti Fornaroli Rosselli was commissioned to design and build part of the Ministries area of the new capital of West Pakistan, Islamabad, which was under construction according to Constantinos Doxiadis and Robert Matthew?s master plan. Fifteen hundred architecture drawings and less than two years later, the buildings were completed. At some moments, five thousand workers were on site at the same time. Project manager Alberto Rosselli declared that the idea was not to transfer their Western knowledge to Pakistan, but to create a new Pakistan. Moved by this incredible project, where the personal stories of the Ponti and Rosselli families crossed paths against a backdrop of architectural and political history, Giovanna Silva traveled to Islamabad in 2020 with Paolo Rosselli, nephew of Gio Ponti and son of Alberto Rosselli. It was a journey through architecture, personal memories, and a city built in the desert as a future capital of a new world, against the beautiful scenery of the Margalla Hills. Silva?s photographs show the buildings in their everyday public function, with a focus on the spaces as performed by their users. The book also features archival images of the building site and construction, and a narrative text by Paolo Rosselli tracing the story of the project and his reactions during his first visit to his father?s work in Islamabad.

This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women’s movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women’s movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.
