Il teatro di Carmelo Bene fa a pezzi il soggetto come categoria del pensiero e dell’azione. Questa operazione radicale non si risolve in astrazioni teoriche, al contrario si inserisce nella scena del suo tempo, si lega a tradizioni teatrali minori e si sviluppa attraverso sperimentazioni innovative. Per farla finita con la rappresentazione attraverso la rappresentazione, Bene disarticola la grammatica simbolica del teatro. Dalla parodia del Grande Attore alla scoperta della phoné, fino al divenire minore della macchina attoriale, il gesto di Bene si fa lorenzaccio, deformazione in atto dei corpi, invocazione di noluntas, abbandono al femminile, rinuncia al potere. Bene prende così le sembianze di un Narciso senza più desiderio, sottratto a se stesso e perso nel puro godimento, vita nella vita, mondo nel mondo.

Logic and Existence, which originally appeared in 1952, completes the project Hyppolite began with Genesis and Structure of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Taking up successively the role of language, reflection, and categories in Hegel's Science of Logic, Hyppolite illuminates Hegelianism's most obscure dialectical synthesis: the relation between the phenomenology and the logic. His interpretation of the relation between the phenomenology and the logic has the result of marking a rupture in French thought. Not only does Logic and Existence effectively end the humanistic reading of Hegel popularized by Koje`ve in France before World War II, but also it initiates the great anti-Hegelianism of French philosophy in the sixties. Hyppolite's work displays the originality of Hegel's thought in a new way, and sets up the means by which to escape from it. If the phrase "the philosophy of difference" defines French anti-Hegelianism, then we have to say that there would be no philosophy of difference without Logic and Existence. Derrida's notion of differance, Deleuze's logic of sense, and Foucault's reconception of history all stem from this book. This first English translation of the virtually unknown Logic and Existence is essential for the understanding of the development of French thought in this century.

Arguing that the virtual body is something new—namely, an entity that from an ontological perspective has only recently entered the world—Roberto Diodato considers the implications of this kind of body for aesthetics. Virtual bodies insert themselves into the space opened up by the famous distinction in Aristotle's Physics between natural and artificial beings—they are both. They are beings that are simultaneously events; they are images that are at once internal and external; they are ontological hybrids that exist only in the interaction between logical-computational text and human bodies endowed with technological prostheses. Pursuing this line of thought, Diodato reconfigures classic aesthetic concepts such as mimesis, representation, the relation between illusion and reality, the nature of images and imagination, and the theory of sensory knowledge.
