Il libro che Benedetto XVI ha voluto fosse pubblicato dopo la sua scomparsa. Negli anni immediatamente successivi al Concilio Vaticano II, il volume Introduzione al cristianesimo faceva conoscere al grande pubblico un giovane teologo tedesco. Oggi, a conclusione della sua vita e in veste di papa emerito, Benedetto XVI affida in eredità quest'opera agli uomini tutti per condividere le sue ultime riflessioni su alcuni temi fondamentali della religione cristiana. Al centro vi è la misericordia di Dio, che nasce da una passione d'amore verso ogni creatura. Al servizio di Dio sono i sacerdoti, chiamati a stare alla sua presenza e a essere testimoni del suo amore. Vi sono poi i temi del dialogo con le altre religioni, con gli ebrei, il popolo della promessa, con le confessioni cristiane, con il mondo. Questo dialogo, tuttavia, non può prescindere dai contenuti centrali del credo: l'incarnazione del Figlio di Dio, la fede nella morte e resurrezione di Gesù, la presenza eucaristica, la comunione fraterna nella Chiesa, i temi centrali della morale cristiana. Come recita il sottotitolo, il volume è quasi un testamento spirituale, dettato dalla sapienza del cuore di un maestro sempre attento alle attese e alle speranze dei fedeli. Negli anni trascorsi nel monastero Mater Ecclesiae in Vaticano la sua presenza discreta e la sua preghiera sono state un sostegno importante per la vita della Chiesa. Da lì osservava benevolo la natura, specchio dell'amore di Dio creatore, dal quale proveniamo e verso il quale siamo diretti. Da lì guardava al suo paese d'origine, la Germania, all'Italia ove trascorse buona parte della sua vita, alla Francia che lo accolse nella sua Académie, all'intera Europa. A questi paesi il papa emerito affida, con voce flebile ma appassionata, la sua richiesta di non rinunciare all'eredità cristiana, che è un patrimonio prezioso per l'intera umanità. In vita, Benedetto XVI non sempre è stato compreso. Nessuno, tuttavia, ha potuto negare la lucidità del suo pensiero e la forza delle sue argomentazioni, che quest'ultima opera egregiamente raccoglie.

Gesù di Nazaret, e non di Betlemme, è un profeta ebraico, l'ultimo e il più grande dei profeti. Non quindi Figlio di Dio, nemmeno resuscitato dalla morte, né apparso realmente ai suoi, Gesù in quanto Messia annuncia un regno messianico a cui succederebbe escatologicamente il regno dei cieli, quello di Dio. Tuttavia non chiarendo tale avvento escatologico, di fatto Gesù è soprattutto un maestro di dottrina morale che esorta a rinunciare al mondo per unirsi spiritualmente e interiormente a Dio, il bene supremo, amando il prossimo. Per Martinetti bisogna aspirare ad una "Chiesa invisibile", in cui si possano compendiare i valori moralmente più elevati di tutte le culture religiose, dando vita così ad una società universale fraternamente unita.
