Per l’Anno della fede abbiamo pensato di proporre al lettore italiano un estratto della Somma Teologica. Nella Seconda Parte di questa famosissima opera, Tommaso si interroga sulla natura della fede, sui rapporti tra la fede e l’intelligenza e la volontà umane, sui peccati contrari alla fede e sui doni dello Spirito Santo, dell’intelletto e della scienza che perfezionano la nostra intelligenza. Credere in Dio è un atto simultaneamente divino e umano. È divino perché deriva dalla virtù della fede teologale, la quale ci è donata solo da Dio, ci fa conoscere ciò che Dio stesso conosce, realizza una certa forma di unione tra noi e Dio, come dice san Paolo: Il Cristo abiti nei vostri cuori per la fede (Ef 3,17), e ci introduce nella vita stessa di Dio, come dice Gesù stesso: Chi ascolta la mia parola e crede a Colui che mi ha mandato ha la vita eterna (Gv 5,24). Ma credere in Dio è anche un atto umano quanto al modo del suo esercizio, perché è un atto, non costretto, ma libero e volontario, in quanto credo perché voglio credere. Perciò è un atto meritorio e lodevole. È un atto non cieco e assurdo, ma ragionevole, perché risponde al desiderio dell’intelligenza umana di conoscere il vero. Le questioni, che qui presentiamo in traduzione italiana, riproducono il trattato sulla fede, contenuto nella Somma Teologica. San Tommaso d’Aquino espone in modo sintetico e organico: la fede in se stessa, le sue cause e i suoi effetti, i doni dello Spirito Santo dell’intelletto e della scienza, i peccati contro la fede che sono l’incredulità, l’eresia, l’apostasia e la bestemmia, e gli effetti di questi peccati che sono la cecità della mente e l’ottusità dei sensi.
