THE 75 YEARS EDITION. 1949-1924 II Grande Torino. They were a team of hearts who sadly few people alive today saw play live. Now just a fading black and white team portrait on a half-ripped postcard. Torino won five Serie A titles on the run and were set for many more. Led by their magnificent Captain and arguably the finest Italian footballer of all time. Valentino Mazzola. Tragically, on 4th May 1949, whilst returning home from Portugal, after a testimonial match the airplane carrying Torino football team, became lost in a thick fog and a ferocious storm, tragically causing it to crash into the Basilica Superga, (a large church on a hill) on the outskirts of Turin, killing everybody aboard. Thirty-one people in all, including eighteen Torino footballers. So died a dream. A catastrophe both on a human and football level for all Italy. (Ten Torino players made up the national side with the goalkeeper from Juventus.) This 75 years edition tells the story of a club ravaged by tragedy since its early days of inception, right up until the modern day. A dark tale of how life is beautiful until death comes unexpectedly calling. From the terrible days of two World Wars, up until Superga. A list of characters that litter the pages with astonishing exploits of both human courage and Fascist cruelty. Torino footballers fighting as Partisans. A very special story and an even more special football club that simply refused to die.

Torino are one of the world's most dramatic and interesting football clubs. Peter Bourne charts the drama and suspense of the summer of 2005 which saw the death and rebirth of the club, placing it within the context of Torino's rich and tragic history.Torino became the first team to be demoted after gaining promotion, have witnessed the death of star players and in 1949 Italy's greatest ever club side wiped out in an air tragedy. This coupled with the passion and resilience of Torino supporters, the epic and lobsided rivalry with Juventus and with the fact that until 1995, Torino had always been one of Italy's top five clubs. The fall and rise of Torino is also placed into context with the unique nature of sport in Italy, the other significant scandals which shocked and paralysed Italian football during the summer of shame and within the context of Turin, a city preparing nervously for the XX Olympic Winter Games in February 2006.

Ernő Egri Erbstein was one of the greatest coaches there has ever been, a pioneering tactician and supreme man-manager who created Il Grande Torino, the team that dominated Italian football in the years immediately after the Second World War. His was an extraordinary life that was characterised by courage and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. Erbstein was part of the great Jewish coaching tradition developed in the coffee houses of Budapest and, playing in Hungary, Italy and the USA, he moved to Bari to embark on a coaching career that soon became noted for its innovativeness. That he and his family survived the Holocaust was a matter of astonishing good fortune, but just four years after the end of the war, Erbstein was killed with his team in the Superga air crash. Dominic Bliss, through a combination of interviews, painstaking archival research and careful detective work, pieces together the lost history of one of football's most influential early heroes. Like our quarterly publications, Blizzard Books will provide the same freedom as in our quarterly editions for writers to write about the football-related subjects that are important to them, be that at the highest level or the lowest, at home or abroad. Eclecticism, and the desire to provide an alternative to that which already exists, is the key.

Winning At All Costs written by John Foot and has been published by Bold Type Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-24 with Sports & Recreation categories.

The 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France was a down-and-dirty game, marred by French superstar Zidane's head-butting of Italian defender Materazzi. But viewers were also exposed to the poetry, force, and excellence of the Italian game; as operatic as Verdi and as cunning as Machiavelli, it seemed to open a window into the Italian soul. John Foot's epic history shows what makes Italian soccer so unique. Mixing serious analysis and comic storytelling, Foot describes its humble origins in northern Italy in the 1890s to its present day incarnation where soccer is the national civic religion. A story that is reminiscent of Gangs of New York and A Clockwork Orange, Foot shows how the Italian game -- like its political culture -- has been overshadowed by big business, violence, conspiracy, and tragedy, how demagogues like Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi have used the game to further their own political ambitions. But Winning at All Costs also celebrates the sweet moments -- the four World Cup victories, the success of Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, the role soccer played in the resistance to Nazism, and the great managers and players who show that Italian soccer is as irresistible as Italy itself.
