This study investigates an almost unknown musical culture: that of cloistered nuns in one of the major cities of early modern Europe. These women were the most famous musicians of Milan, and the music composed for them opens up a hitherto unstudied musical repertory, which allows insight into the symbolic world of the city. Even more importantly, the music actually composed by four such nuns, Claudia Scossa, Claudia Rusca, Chiara Margarita Cozzollani, and Rosa Giacinta Badalla - reveals the musical expression of women's devotional life. The two centuries' worth of battles over nuns' singing of polyphony, studies here for the first time on the basis of massive archival documentation, also suggest that the implementation of reform in the major centre of post-Tridentine Catholic renewal was far more varied; incomplete, subject to local political pressure and individual interpretation, and short-lived than any religious historian has ever suggested. Other factors that marked nuns' musical lives and creative output - liturgical traditions of the religious orders, the problems of performance practice attendant upon all-female singing ensembles - are here addressed for the first time in the musicological literature.

25 aprile 2014: il corpo di Roberto Centurioni, senza tetto, viene ritrovato in piazza Martinez, morto per strangolamento. L’indagine viene affidata al commissario Andrea Pagani, di recente insediatosi nel commissariato di San Fruttuoso. Pochi giorni prima dell’omicidio, la madre di Pagani muore di tumore e il commissario, con la sorella Marina, vecchia amica di Lorenzo, svuota la casa di famiglia in via Torti. Lì trova fotografie e lettere di suo nonno. In particolare, due istantanee richiamano l’attenzione dei due uomini: una foto ritrae Aldo Pagani, nonno del commissario, poco più che bambino nei pressi della Chiesa delle Vigne in compagnia di altri due bambini. Lorenzo, che è con lui per ficcanasare un po’, riconosce suo nonno, Antonio Satta. Sul retro della fotografia una data (8 febbraio 1941) e tre nomi: Aldo, Antonio e Roberto (il terzo bambino), che Pagani riconosce come la vittima dell’omicidio. Un’altra foto, invece, ritrae gli stessi tre bambini e un quarto, di nome Giobatta, il 25 aprile 1945 in via XX Settembre. Qualche giorno più tardi, Lorenzo riceve un pacco da suo fratello contenente diversi cimeli di famiglia. Tra questi un diario, redatto dal nonno tra l’8 febbraio 1941 e il 9 febbraio 1944, con una pagina finale che racconta la giornata tra il 25 e il 26 aprile 1945. Ripiegata nel diario trova anche una copia carbone di una lettera di scuse, firmata da suo nonno, Aldo Pagani e Roberto Centurioni, indirizzata a una tale signora Barcaccia. Nell’ultima pagina del diario, Antonio Satta parla di una foto che lo ritrae insieme ai suoi tre compagni, Centurioni incluso. Lorenzo mostra la lettera a Pagani e la foto, che è la stessa che hanno ritrovato in casa della madre del commissario. Sono ormai consapevoli che per risolvere il caso del senza tetto dovranno scavare nel passato, svelando una storia genovese che i loro nonni si sono gelosamente portati nella tomba.
