Sentendosi chiamata da Dio alla liberazione del territorio francese, occupato dagli inglesi durante la guerra dei Cent'Anni, Giovanna d'Arco ottenne dal «re di Bourges» il comando di un'armata che giunse fino a Reims sbaragliando l'avversario. Ma per la corte di Francia quella giovane donna che pareva avere il dono sovrannaturale dell'invincibilità risultava imbarazzante. Catturata, imprigionata e condannata dall'Inquisizione, fu bruciata pubblicamente come una strega il 30 maggio 1431 a diciannove anni. Nel 1456 una nuova sentenza dell'Inquisizione la dichiarò innocente. Cinquecento anni dopo fu proclamata santa. Della sua figura si sono impossessati il teatro, il cinema, la politica, la religione e la psicoanalisi. Ma il nucleo del suo mistero continua ancora a sfuggirci.

Charles Peguy (1873-1914) letterato di talento, socialista, si convert� al cattolicesimo nel 1907, ma per la sua intransigenza non fu mai accettato completamente da nessuna delle due comunit�. La sua opera pi� famosa, "I misteri di Giovanna d'Arco" si compone di quattro diverse opere, uscite in tempi diversi, opere in prosa e in versi sciolti, che per il linguaggio moderno, ripetizioni quasi ipnotiche e per il contenuto profondamente religioso, assolutamente non banale, sono estremamente suggestive e interessanti; in ordine: "Il mistero della carit� di Giovanna d'Arco", "Il portico del mistero della seconda virt�", "Il mistero dei santi innocenti", "Il mistero della vocazione di Giovanna d'Arco", queste ultime due postume. Le voci che si incontrano nelle opere sono di: Giovanna d'Arco, tredicenne, Hauviette, la sua amica di dieci anni, e madame Gervaise, giovane suora appena convertita, con cui Giovanna vuole confrontarsi per porle i suoi dubbi di fede. Giovanna e madame Gervaise, entrambe visionarie, discutono e dibattono a lungo su temi religiosi, e madame Gervaise, pi� matura, con un lungo monologo che a volte passa dalla prosa ai versi sciolti, rintuzza pi� volte l'orgoglio (personale e patriottico) e la presunzione dell'adolescente Giovanna, che non accetta di subire l'invasione della Lorena da parte degli inglesi e si vergogna dell'acquiescenza dei suoi cari e della popolazione locale. Le parla a lungo della seconda virt�, la Speranza, della la predilezione di Dio per l'innocenza dell'uomo che si affida nelle braccia di Dio e per l'innocenza dei bambini, primi fra tutti i Fiori dei Martiri, gli innocenti uccisi da Erode. Jeannette, dal canto suo, nelle ultime pagine postume (che potevano forse non essere ultime nel poema originale) passa dalla gioia di una preghiera esaudita (la salvezza della fortezza di Mont Saint Michel) alla rabbia di una nuova disfatta, e, infine alla incredulit� per la sua chiamata.
