Chi è, veramente, Gesù? Sappiamo cosa è diventato dopo la sua morte, in duemila anni di fede cristiana. Ma come lo considerano i contemporanei? Cosa pensano quando lo ascoltano parlare e mentre lo vedono agire? Poco prima della fine, egli pronuncia su di sé parole enigmatiche: «Io so da dove vengo, e dove vado. Voi, invece, non sapete da dove vengo e dove vado» (Gv 8,14). Può questo messaggio di un «re» ebreo illuminare anche l'origine e la meta della nostra vita? Attraverso un fitto e appassionato dialogo con i Vangeli, Giulio Busi traccia il profilo di un Gesù ribelle, assai diverso dall'immagine del buon pastore, mite e mansueto, trasmessa da gran parte della tradizione cristiana. È il Gesù della polemica e dell'invettiva. E, insieme, il Gesù visionario che sovverte e trascende ogni limite di spazio e di tempo, in continuo movimento tra il «qui» della sofferenza e della sopraffazione e il «là» della pace e della vita spirituale. A delinearsi con chiarezza in queste pagine è, in particolare, una «storia ebraica» del maestro di Nazaret. Per lui, infatti, gli ebrei non sono mai «loro» ma «noi». E se la sua ribellione s'indirizza anche contro l'élite religiosa giudaica, è pur sempre la ribellione di un ebreo, orgoglioso della propria appartenenza, che sa interpretare la Torah in modo straordinariamente raffinato, eppure libero, nuovo, creativo. Alla fine, Gesù è un re proscritto, su cui pende un ordine di arresto. Un rabbi itinerante braccato e costretto a nascondersi. Quando sale a Gerusalemme per l'ultima Pasqua, sa che verrà tradito, catturato, percosso, ucciso. I suoi si sbandano, rinnegano. Solo un gruppo di donne non lo lascia nell'ora più oscura. E soltanto una donna cerca il proprio maestro e per prima lo trova, all'alba, in un giardino, al di là della morte. Il giudaismo ha rifiutato il regno senza potere impersonato da Gesù. Il cristianesimo ha trasformato la missione errante dei primi discepoli ebrei, senza famiglia e senza averi, senza bagaglio e senza armi, in una realtà solida, ben costruita, capace di durare per millenni. Ma la ribellione di Gesù ancora continua.
