Attraverso l'intera gamma dei piccoli attori animati dalla mano dell'artista manovratore si muove la raccolta di Maria Signorelli, curata fino ad oggi, come risalta dall'intervista di Gabriella Manna che apre la presente rassegna di saggi, con sacrificio e passione da Giuseppina Volpicelli. Maria Signorelli riuscí a comporre una delle più importanti collezioni private dell'Europa, che fa del palazzetto romano di via Corsini la dimora non solo della famiglia ma altresí degli innumerevoli piccoli, ma - come si osserva pure nella presente mostra - anche grandi, personaggi di filo, stoffe, cuoio, legno, che lo animano intensamente nella vivissima fissità cui sono costretti. La proclamazione Unesco del wayang kulit dell'Indonesia come parte del Patrimonio orale e immateriale dell'umanità (2003), che affianca quella conseguita fin dal 2001 dall'Opera dei Pupi, non può che essere un riconoscimento parziale e iniziale a questo grande mondo dell'espressione, e pone finalmente l'accento sulla rilevanza di quegli spettacoli che in Thailandia avevano incantato Maria Signorelli e le figlie, e che qui ripercorriamo, in alcuni casi con riferimenti alla loro collezione; viene ricordato come le stesse abbiano fissato “in tante fotografie (...) i movimenti di danza effettuati dai manovratori per animare le grandi figure sostenute da bastoni”, azioni specialistiche, quasi iniziatiche, che della complessa realtà del teatro di figura orientale riconducono soprattutto alle fondamentali funzioni di comunicazione, spesso irrimediabilmente perdute. Questi aspetti del patrimonio intangibile del teatro delle ombre, che il civile mondo della cultura ha individuato come bene da proteggere, vengono oggi in parte semplificati e sclerotizzati mentre lo spettacolo rischia di essere ridotto ad attrazione per turisti, con perdita della complessità e della raffinatezza, anche sul piano della tecnica di fabbricazione dei personaggi, trend che si spera possa essere scongiurato e che ne giustifica vieppiù la dignità di materia da acquisire, fissare per sempre e raccontare in sedi come il Museo Nazionale di Arte Orientale che, anche se la visita di massa dei piccoli spiriti durerà solo pochi mesi, è onorato di ospitarli.

Uno studioso proveniente da un paese freddo viveva in un paese caldo e aveva difficoltà ad adattarsi al clima. Nella luce del giorno la sua ombra diventava minuscola: faceva davvero troppo caldo per lui. Così rimaneva in casa e usciva soltanto la sera. Quando la temperatura calava, il paesino si animava. Una notte lo studioso fu svegliato da una luce misteriosa e intrigante. Cos’era? Come si poteva spiegare? Avrebbe cercato di scoprirlo. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) è stato uno scrittore, poeta e artista danese. È celebre la sua letteratura per bambini; tra le sue fiabe più amate si citano "I vestiti nuovi dell’imperatore", "La sirenetta", "L'usignuolo", "Il soldatino di stagno", "La regina delle nevi", "Il brutto anitroccolo" e "La piccola fiammiferaia". I suoi libri sono stati tradotti in tutte le lingue viventi del mondo e al giorno d’oggi non c’è bambino o adulto che non abbia avuto modo di conoscere gli estrosi personaggi di Andersen. Le sue fiabe sono state il soggetto di infiniti adattamenti per il teatro e per il cinema, soprattutto da parte della Disney con i film d’animazione "La sirenetta" del 1989 e "Frozen", liberamente tratto da "La regina delle nevi", del 2013. Grazie all’enorme contributo dato da Andersen alla letteratura per l’infanzia, nel 2 aprile, giorno del suo compleanno, si celebra la Giornata internazionale del libro per bambini.

This volume examines mystical experiences as portrayed in various ways by “authors” such as philosophers, mystics, psychoanalysts, writers, and peasant women. These “mystical authors” have, throughout the ages, attempted to convey the unsayable through writings, paintings, or oral stories. The immediate experience of God is the primary source and ultimate goal of these mystical expressions. This experience is essentially ineffable, yet all mystical authors, either consciously or unconsciously, feel an urge to convey what they have undergone in the moments of rapture. At the same time they are in the role of intermediaries: the goal of their self-expression – either written, painted or oral – is to make others somehow understand or feel what they have experienced, and to lead others toward the spiritual goal of human life. This volume studies the mystical experiences and the way they have been described or portrayed in West-European culture, from Antiquity to the present, from an interdisciplinary perspective, and approaches the concept of “immediate experience” in various ways.
