Alle soglie del 2023 è ormai difficile sostenere che la crisi sanitaria dovuta all’epidemia da coronavirus (e la conseguente crisi politico-economica) costituisca, come si affannavano a ripetere analisti e commentatori nel 2020, una svolta “epocale” della storia. È però innegabile che si tratti di un evento importante, i cui effetti più profondi sul modo di pensare la politica non possono ancora apparire in maniera chiara. Il volume intende chiedersi se una crisi di questa portata abbia avuto il potere o meno di mutare il retroterra culturale e il milieu all’interno dei quali trovano forma e sostanza idee e concetti della politica. Nel tentativo di uscire dal “qui e ora” a cui la pandemia ci ha costretto, l’obiettivo è di riflettere in una prospettiva diacronica su alcune delle principali categorie della politica al fine di verificare se abbiano subito una ridefinizione o quanto meno una revisione, di fronte agli eventi prodotti dalla diffusione del virus SARS-CoV-2 e dalle risposte che sul piano politico interno e internazionale sono state date dai diversi governi del mondo. Come in una sorta di “dizionario di politica”, il libro è strutturato a voci, ciascuna delle quali si compone di una parte iniziale di definizione del concetto e di ricostruzione della sua evoluzione storica attraverso il riferimento ai classici e alla più recente letteratura e da una seconda parte in cui il concetto in questione viene analizzato alla luce della crisi pandemica.

L’Indonesia ha dimostrato di occupare un posto di rilievo nella scena artistica emergente, sia dal punto di vista della proposta culturale che del mercato. Questo libro è un’introduzione all’arte contemporanea in Indonesia. Collocandosi nella dialettica tra globale e locale, questo lavoro analizza in breve come in Indonesia il contesto culturale, artistico, politico e sociale abbia influenzato quattro generazioni di artisti. Il volume è diviso in due parti: Nella prima parte i convenzionali parametri di valutazione critica occidentale vengono ridiscussi nella loro applicazione all’arte contemporanea nel Sud-Est Asiatico. Un’analisi culturale sintetica ma completa si sostituisce le aspettative di stereotipo e il pericolo dell’esotismo al quale si potrebbe incorrere parlando di arte contemporanea in Indonesia. Nella seconda parte si esamina l’origine e lo sviluppo dell’arte contemporanea in relazione al contesto. La prima generazione presa in considerazione, operante negli anni ’40 a cavallo dell’Indipendenza indonesiana, concepisce l’arte come strumento di formazione di un’identità nazionale in un clima postcoloniale. La seconda generazione di artisti è ancora politicizzata: l’arte negli anni della dittatura di Suharto costituisce uno strumento di lotta sociale contro il potere. La terza generazione, quella post-Suharto, lavora in un clima di rinnovata libertà. Nel 2000 l’arte comincia a germogliare assumendo il ruolo di aggregazione delle comunità. La quarta generazione è meno impegnata in temi politici e sociali, essendo più interessata ad una presenza nel mercato. Quest’ultimo, sempre più invasivo, finisce per influenzare i parametri di qualità. L’ultimo capitolo si riallaccia al discorso introduttivo sulla località e la globalità, considerando l’approccio degli artisti espatriati (in particolar modo a Bali) e gli artisti indonesiani che hanno scelto di lavorare all’estero, valutando in entrambi i casi l’incidenza del contesto culturale indonesiano. Ogni passaggio concettuale è accompagnato dall’evidenza di alcune opere selezionate, dalle testimonianze degli artisti indonesiani, e dall’opinione di studiosi, critici e personaggi del mondo dell’arte specializzati nell’Indonesia e del Sud Est Asiatico e dall’esperienza personale dell’autrice in Indonesia.

Oltre ai costi economici, la frammentazione favorisce il caos geopolitico e accresce il rischio di conflitti. Ma può anche innescare una globalizzazione secondo criteri economici e geopolitici diversi. Artico, Subacqueo, Spazio e Digitale possono essere fronti di scontro o, con le loro enormi opportunità, rappresentare le nuove frontiere della globalizzazione. Il mondo che verrà dipenderà molto dalle democrazie liberali e dalla loro capacità di promuovere i propri valori. La speranza è che il rilancio nella circolazione di merci, servizi, capitali, persone e conoscenza possa consolidare i diritti e diffondere le libertà.

Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract.
