For the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Staatliches Bauhaus in 2019, the Documenta archive and the University of Kassel conceived an exhibition, a symposium and this publication, as a means of examining the affinities between the legacies of the interconnected "brands" of Bauhaus and Documenta. Both institutions came into being after the cataclysms of world war (in 1919 and 1955) and both of them "exemplify," as the organizers put it, "the liberating power of art and culture." Collecting writings from key figures in the formation of both organizations--including Arnold Bode, Walter Gropius and Hannes Meyer--alongside contributions by scholars and academics Bazon Brock, Walter Grasskamp, Birgit Jooss, Philipp Oswalt, Nora Sternfeld, Annette Tietenberg, Fred Turner, Daniel Tyradellis and Daniela Stöppel (among many others), this is a major assessment of two exemplars of Germany's pivotal role in modern and contemporary art.

Breaching The Frame written by Pedro R. Erber and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-12 with Art categories.

Circa 1960, artists working at the margins of the international art world breached the frame of canvas painting and ruptured the institutional frame of art. Members of the Brazilian Neoconcrete group, such as HŽlio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, and their counterparts in Japan, such as Akasegawa Genpei and the Kansai-based Gutai Art Association, challenged the boundaries between art and non-art, between fiction and reality, between visual artwork and its discursive frame. In place of the indefinitely deferred promise of a revolution of the senses, artists called for Òdirect actionÓ here and now. Pedro Erber situates the beginnings of these profound transformations of art in the politically charged debates on realism and abstraction and in the experiments of 1950s concrete poetry. He shows how artists and critics in Brazil and Japan brought modern painting to a point of crisis that paved the way for the radical experiments of the 1960s generation. In contrast to the ÒdematerializationÓ of the art object promoted by New YorkÐbased critics and conceptual artists in the late 1960s, avant-garde artists and poets in Brazil and Japan embraced materiality as intrinsic and fundamental to their highly conceptual practices. Breaching the Frame explores their uncannily contemporaneous trajectories, tracing the emergence of participatory practices and theories that challenged the limits of aesthetic contemplation and redefined the politics of spectatorship.

This book investigates key aspects of the development of engaged and entrepreneurial universities. Reflecting the complex and dynamic nature of changes in higher education institutions (HEIs), multi-level perspectives in the field are taken into account, namely the ecosystem, relationship, organisational and individual perspective. The book highlights the entrepreneurial and the social orientation of HEIs by focusing on both primary economically focused (entrepreneurial) universities and primary socially focused (engaged) universities. It challenges the understanding of the role universities and its individual stakeholders play today. The book explores a multitude of facets and perspectives on the topic and addresses both what we already know and what knowledge still needs to be acquired.

Rethinking Democracy written by Leo Panitch and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-22 with Political Science categories.

For years, intellectuals have argued that, with the triumph of capitalist, liberal democracy, the Western World has reached “the end of history.” Recently, however, there has been a rise of authoritarian politics in many countries. Concepts of post-democracy, anti-politics, and the like are gaining currency in theoretical and political debate. Now that capitalist democracies are facing seismic and systemic challenges, it becomes increasingly important to investigate not only the inherent antagonism between liberalism and the democratic process, but also socialism. Is socialism an enemy of democracy? Could socialism develop, expand, even enhance democracy? While this volume seeks a reappraisal of existing liberal democracy today, its main goal is to help lay the foundation for new visions and practices in developing a real socialist democracy. Amid the contradictions of neoliberal capitalism today, the responsibility to sort out the relationship between socialism and democracy has never been greater. No revival of socialist politics in the twenty-first century can occur without founding new democratic institutions and practices.
