Since the dawn of Romanticism, artists and intellectuals in Germany have maintained an abiding interest in the gods and myths of antiquity while calling for a new mythology suitable to the modern age. In this study, George S. Williamson examines the factors that gave rise to this distinct and profound longing for myth. In doing so, he demonstrates the entanglement of aesthetic and philosophical ambitions in Germany with some of the major religious conflicts of the nineteenth century. Through readings of key intellectuals ranging from Herder and Schelling to Wagner and Nietzsche, Williamson highlights three crucial factors in the emergence of the German engagement with myth: the tradition of Philhellenist neohumanism, a critique of contemporary aesthetic and public life as dominated by private interests, and a rejection of the Bible by many Protestant scholars as the product of a foreign, "Oriental" culture. According to Williamson, the discourse on myth in Germany remained bound up with problems of Protestant theology and confessional conflict through the nineteenth century and beyond. A compelling adventure in intellectual history, this study uncovers the foundations of Germany's fascination with myth and its enduring cultural legacy.

In times past, everyday business might mean making a trip to the pawnbroker, giving a loan to a trusted friend of selling off a coat, all to make ends meet. Both women and men engaged in this daily budgeting, but women's roles were especially important in achieving some level of comfort and avoiding penury. In some communities, the daily practices in place in the seventeenth century persisted into the twentieth, whilst other groups adopted new ways, such as using numbers to chart domestic affairs and turning to the savings banks that appeared in the nineteenth century. These strategies promised respectability and greater access to new consumer goods: better clothes and finer furnishings accompanied a newly disciplined behaviour. Therefore, in the material world of the past and in the changing habits of earlier generations lie crucial turning points. This book explores these previously under-researched patterns and practices that gave shape to modern consumer society.

Kaiserreich 1871-1914‘. Bisher haben die SuS grundlegende Kenntnisse über die Entstehung des Reiches (Schritte zur Reichsgründung, Kaiserproklamation) und dessen innenpolitischen Aufbau (Reichsverfassung, Parteienspektrum) erworben. Daran schloss sich die Thematisierung verschiedener Reichsfeinde an (Politik mit Zuckerbrot und Peitsche, Kulturkampf; rassischer Antisemitismus). Die Schwerpunkte hinsichtlich der Arbeitstechniken lagen auf der Interpretation von Bildquellen sowie der Analyse von Darstellungstexten und Schriftquellen. Die Prüfungsstunde stellt den Einstieg in die Binneneinheit Militarismus dar. Dabei wurde sich für die thematische Herangehensweise über die Ermittlung des Ist-Zustandes - d.h. die Stellung des Militärs in der Öffentlichkeit - entschieden . Der Inhalt stellt damit nicht den Höhepunkt der zu erreichenden Erkenntnis dar, schafft aber die elementaren Voraussetzungen für eine weitreichendere und kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Komplex Militarismus. Diese wird in den Folgestunden durch die Behandlung des patriotischen Kaiserwillens (Armee als Schule der Nation) und dessen Umsetzung sowie der Entzauberung des Militärs durch die fächerübergreifende Thematisierung des Hauptmann von Köpenicks realisiert. Bei Letzterem steht der Umgang mit Filmquellen im Fokus der Kompetenzschulung. Indem die Prüfungs- und deren Folgestunden den Komplex Militarismus thematisieren, erleichtern sie den Übergang zur Einheit Imperialismus, der mit dem dt. Imperialismus begonnen werden wird.

Red Saxony throws new light on the reciprocal relationship between political modernization and authoritarianism in Germany over the span of six decades. Election battles were fought so fiercely in Imperial Germany because they reflected two kinds of democratization. Social democratization could not be stopped, but political democratization was opposed by many members of the German bourgeoisie. Frightened by the electoral success of the Social Democrats after 1871, anti-democrats deployed many strategies that flew in the face of electoral fairness. They battled socialists, liberals, and Jews at election time, but they also strove to rewrite the electoral rules of the game. Using a regional lens to rethink older assumptions about Germany's changing political culture, this volume focuses as much on contemporary Germans' perceptions of electoral fairness as on their experiences of voting. It devotes special attention to various semi-democratic voting systems whereby a general and equal suffrage (for the Reichstag) was combined with limited and unequal ones for local and regional parliaments. For the first time, democratization at all three tiers of governance and their reciprocal effects are considered together. Although the bourgeois face of German authoritarianism was nowhere more evident than in the Kingdom of Saxony, Red Saxony illustrates how other Germans grew to fear the spectre of democracy. Certainly twists and turns lay ahead, yet that fear made it easier for Hitler and the Nazis to win elections in the 1920s and to entomb German democracy in 1933.
