Diese Arbeit untersucht nichtprädikative partizipiale Fügungen jeglicher Art, v.a. aber solche mit restriktiv-attributiver, nichtrestrik- tiv-attributiver und sekundärprädikativer Funktion hinsichtlich ihrer syntaktischen und semantischen, z.T. auch pragmatischen und stilistischen Aspekte und vergleicht sie mit entsprechenden finiten Umschreibungen. Zu den behandelten Fragen gehören Diathese, Zeitreferenz und Modalität von Partizipialkonstruktionen, ferner der Einfluss semantischer «cases» auf die Partizipialisierung, der Kennzeichnungscharakter von Attributen u.v.a. Die formale Auswertung dieser Beobachtungen in einem generativ-transformationellen, über Chomsky's «Erweiterte Standard-Theorie» hinausgehenden Modell ergibt, dass Relativsätze entgegen der bisherigen Annahme nicht als Vorstufe, sondern als Alternative reduzierter Attribute zu behandeln sind und dass sekundär-prädikative Syntagmen einen eigenen, nicht direkt mit konjunktionalen Haupt- und Nebensätzen (Adverbialsätzen) zu korrelierenden Konstruktionstyp darstellen, der allerdings eng verwandt ist mit nichtrestriktiven Attributen.
