Henry Nelson Wieman's (1884-1975) most distinctive philosophical contributions are his identification of creative interchange as the ultimate process in human experience through which people and their institutions are able to create, sustain, improve, and correct their value perspectives and, equally important, his description of creative interchange in psychological, sociological, historical, religious, and institutional contexts as subject inquiry and the experimental test of consequences. This massive collection, thirty-three original essays with an appendix and index, represents the first formal attempt to consider fully the interdisciplinary implications of creative interchange. Following an introduction, the book is structured into six sections, beginning with historical studies on the development of Wieman's philosophy of creativity. With this information as a base the subsequent five sections treat: (1)his metaphysics and theory of knowledge; (2)his theory of value; (3)creative interchange in the context of rhetoric and literary criticism; (4)creative interchange as a guide for social philosophy; and (5) creative interchange as related to current philosophic trends. The essayists include prominent philosophers, such as Charles Hartshorne, Lewis E.Hahn, and S. Morris Eames, as well as emerging scholars who have responded to Wieman's conception of creative interchange.

The X. European Symposium on Calcified Tissues took place in Hamburg from 16th to 21 st September 1973. The financial backing came from the Gesund heitsbehorde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (President Dr. Zylmann), the Bundesministerium fur Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit, and from industry. This made it possible to carry out the scientific program, to invite several European and non-European scientists, and to organize a social program designed to establish personal contact between delegates and to make visitors acquainted with our country. In the name of the organizing committee, we herewith express our warmest appreciation of all the help given to us. Professor Bartelheimer, as the representative of the Medical Faculty and on behalf of the President of the University of Hamburg, welcomed the Parti cipants in the symposium to our city. The history of these meetings began in Oxford in 1963, with the First European Bone and Tooth Symposium, organized by H. J. J. Blackwood, B. E. C. Nordin, and Dame Janet Vaughan. The idea was to found in Europe an institution simi lar to the American Gordon Research Conferences of Bone and Tooth. After the U. K. , the host countries were Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy, Israel and Austria. The second symposium in Liege already bore the present name.

World War II remains the defining experience for the U.S. Army in the twentieth century. It has had a lasting impact on the nation and its place in the world and on the Army and the way it organizes and fights. Although historians have written numerous volumes concerning this global conflict, some gap in the literature remain. In particular, the subject of an American field army headquarters and its organization and role have attracted little attention. Studies on the personalities and styles of individual commanders exist, but the command posts themselves-the ways in they were structures and operated and the functions they performed-have not been much explored. With A Command Post at War: First Army Headquarters in Europe, 1943-1945, the Center of Military History attempts to redress this shortcoming. This study addresses the First Army headquarters in the European theater from its activation in October 1943 to V-E Day in May 1945. Under Generals Omar N. Bradley and Courtney H. Hodges, the First Army headquarters oversaw the American landings on D-Day, the breakout from the Normandy beachhead, the battle of H]rtgen Forest along the German frontier, the defense of the northern shoulder during the Battle of the Bulge, and the crossing of the Rhine River at Remagen prior to the final American drive into central Germany. In examining the First Army headquarters' role, this volume shows the army headquarters of World War II as a complicated organization with functions ranging from the immediate supervision of tactical operations to long-range operational planning and the sustained support of frontline units. The commander and staff faced the problem of coordination with Allied counterpartsas well as with headquarters and units from other services. Inadequate information and the limitations of technology added to their challenges. The human dimension was always important, and at times critical, in affecting the work of the headquarters under the stresses of a difficult campaign against an obstinate and resourceful foe. Although times have changed and the modern Army focuses more on regional conflicts and contingencies than on global warfare, we can still learn much from the experience of the First Army headquarters. The Gulf War reemphasized the role of an army headquarters in a theater of operations as a pertinent issue for today's military professional. By examining the experience of soldiers in past conflicts we gain the deeper perspectives and understandings necessary to meet the challenges facing the Army today and in the future. The U.S. Army GHQ Maneuvers of 1941 is a masterful study of the largest military training exercises ever conducted by a military organization attempting to mobilize and modernize simultaneously during a rapidly changing international security environment. As suggested by Christopher R. Gabel, the maneuvers had an incalculable influence on the development of the American force structure in World War II, giving Army formations experience in teamwork and combined arms. Viewed by Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall as the "combat college for troop leading" for the rising crop of field-grade officers, they also served to test emerging assumptions about doctrine, organization, and equipment. Gabel's work assumes its rightful place as an important and useful addition to the body of historical literature on military training. The evolution of training in the U.S. Army, particularly the linkage between maneuvers and changes in doctrine and organization, is worthy of reflection by military students and those with an interest in maneuvers as field laboratories for simulating large-scale engagements.

As a medical student in the 1930s, I remember well that a very clear line of distinction was drawn between physical illness and mental illness. Physical illness resulted from pathology which could be identified and studied in detail and the cause could often be deduced. Treatment thus was often specific and based upon a proper appreciation of underlying basic science. Mental illness, on the other hand, could not, it was believed, be based upon identifiable changes in basic science. It was literally 'all in the mind' and, occurring in the absence of causes that could be identified, analysed and remedied, had no treatment that could in any way be called specific. N ow it is all too easy, in Medicine, for a doctor to become so immersed in a specialty that he fails to notice how his colleagues in other specialties are faring and, through laziness, to miss advances even of fundamental importance in fields other than those in which he himself works. As a consultant surgeon, after W orId War II, although I realized the importance of keeping in touch with those medical specialties which appeared to have a common interface with my own surgical interests, such as general medi cine, gastro-enterology, hepatology and endocrinology, it did not occur to me that there was any pressing need to ask what was new in Psychological Medicine.
