Sobre la ética hay grandes teorías, pero la ética también afecta a la vida concreta, es decir, a las «actividades de la vida» y a las ideas que uno se hace de lo que sería una «vida buena y ordenada». El lector encontrará, en primer lugar, indicaciones pertinentes sobre las dos grandes tradiciones que todavía hoy conforman una conciencia moral: la kantiana, con su preocupación universalista, y la aristotélica, tan centrada en el agente moral concreto. Lo universal y lo particular viven sus tensiones, que se manifiestan cuando se ponen juntos los conceptos de «igualdad» y de «identidad cultural». En este afán por identificar los hilos conductores de una conciencia moral moderna, hay que señalar el papel de las emociones, el de la sociedad, el del poder público, el de la religión o el de la mujer. La segunda parte se ocupa de lo que se ha dado en llamar «ética aplicada». La reflexión moral no puede quedar en grandes ideas, sino que tiene que ser capaz de decir algo orientativo sobre los problemas de la vida. Por ello se ofrece una reflexión en voz alta sobre las actividades y campos nuevos que por su importancia merecen un juicio moral. Son éstos: la práctica biomédica, la transformación del medio ambiente y las actividades empresariales. Son continentes vastos y desconocidos, por eso se hacen propuestas abiertas, tentativas. Y también, orientadoras.
