Conversations With Zygmunt Bauman written by Zygmunt Bauman and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-31 with Social Science categories.

Zygmunt Bauman is one of the leading figures in contemporary social thought. His work ranges across issues of ethics, culture and politics. It never forgets that social thought ought to help men and women make sense of their lives and aspire towards something different. His books and essays always focus on the here and now: violence and moral indifference, globalization, consumerism, politics and individualization. They cast a sharp eye on the panaceas of ‘there is no alternative'; the embrace of community and the fads of the ‘counselling boom'; through which men and women are told that they can achieve biographical solutions to what are, in fact, systemic problems. In this new book, Zygmunt Bauman and Keith Tester engage in five accessible conversations that uncover and explore the assumptions and commitments underpinning Bauman's ground-breaking social thought. The conversations show how those commitments have influenced Bauman's analyses of modernity, postmodernity and ‘liquid modernity'. The book ranges widely, from autobiographical reflection through to pointers for the understanding and future of Bauman's social thought. The conversations illustrate the moral substance of Bauman's refusal to accept that the world cannot be made different. They show why social thought is a human necessity. Conversations with Zygmunt Bauman is a book which will offer fresh insight into Bauman's work for those who are familiar with it, and provide an engaging and helpful entry point for those who are new to it.

The Minor Gesture written by Erin Manning and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-19 with Philosophy categories.

In this wide-ranging and probing book Erin Manning extends her previous inquiries into the politics of movement to the concept of the minor gesture. The minor gesture, although it may pass almost unperceived, transforms the field of relations. More than a chance variation, less than a volition, it requires rethinking common assumptions about human agency and political action. To embrace the minor gesture's power to fashion relations, its capacity to open new modes of experience and manners of expression, is to challenge the ways in which the neurotypical image of the human devalues alternative ways of being moved by and moving through the world—in particular what Manning terms "autistic perception." Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis and Whitehead's speculative pragmatism, Manning's far-reaching analyses range from fashion to depression to the writings of autistics, in each case affirming the neurodiversity of the minor and the alternative politics it gestures toward.

Action And Reaction written by Jean Starobinski and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03-06 with History categories.

A study of the word pair "action and reaction" embracing philosophy, semantics, literature, and science. What do biologists mean when they say that to live is to react? Why was the term abreaction invented and later abandoned by the first generation of psychoanalysts? What is meant by reactionary politics? These are but a few of the questions the internationally renowned scholar Jean Starobinski answers in his conceptual history of the word pair, action and reaction. Not simply a history of ideas, Action and Reaction is also a semantic and philological history, a literary history, a history of medicine, and a history of the biological sciences. By concentrating on the moment when scientific language and ordinary language diverge, Starobinski uncovers a genealogy of the human and natural sciences through their usage of action and reaction as metaphors. Newton's law--to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction--becomes a point of departure for an exploration of the lexical and metaphorical traces left in its wake. Starobinski analyzes the scientific, literary, and political effects of the use of the terms action and reaction to describe and explain the material universe, the living body, historical events, and psychological behavior. In what he calls a "polyphonic score"--a kind of mosaic--he uses his subject to offer new insights into the work of philosophers (Aristotle, Leibniz, Kant, Nietzsche, Jaspers), scientists (Newton, Bichat, Bernard, Bernheim, Freud), and writers (Diderot, Constant, Balzac, Poe, Valry). Ultimately, the book explores the power and danger of metaphorical language and questions the convergence and collapse of scientific and moral explanations of the universe.

Fundamentals Of Indian Philosophy written by R. Puligandla and has been published by Jain Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05 with Philosophy, Indic categories.

Indian philosophy reflects some of the earliest thought-traditions in human history. The Indian thinkers of old aimed their pragmatic philosophies at not just the satisfaction of intellectual curiosity or pursuit of theoretical truths but actually the assimilation of intellectually discerned and established truths into one's own personality for a life of freedom and enlightenment. This is true of modern Indian philosophers, like Sri Aurobindo and Dr. Radhakrishnan, as well. Fundamentals of Indian Philosophy reflects the vastness and richness of this philosophic tradition in a comprehensive yet compact presentation that lays bare the essentials of Indian philosophy. Professor Puligandla takes special care to emphasize the methods, temper and goals of Indian philosophy even while delving into the specificities. All the major schools of the philosophic tradition are objectively and thoroughly analyzed: the Carvaka materialism, Jainism, Buddhism, Yoga, and Vedanta among them.

Buddha And The Gospel Of Buddhism written by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy and has been published by Pickle Partners Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-05 with Religion categories.

“THE aim of this book is to set forth as simply as possible the Gospel of Buddhism according to the Buddhist scriptures, and to consider the Buddhist systems in relation, on the one hand, to the Brahmanical systems in which they originate, and, on the other hand, to those systems of Christian mysticism which afford the nearest analogies. At the same time the endeavour has been made to illustrate the part which Buddhist thought has played in the whole development of Asiatic culture, and to suggest a part of the significance it may still possess for modern thinkers. “The way of the Buddha is not, indeed, concerned directly with the order of the world, for it calls on higher men to leave the marketplace. But the order of the world can only be established on a foundation of knowledge: every evil is ultimately traceable to ignorance. It is necessary, then, to recognize the world for what it truly is. Gautama teaches us that the marks of this life are imperfection, transcience, and the absence of any changeless individuality. He sets before us a summum bonum closely akin to the Christian mystic conception of ‘self-naughting.’ Here are definite statements which must be either true or false, and a clearly defined goal which we must either accept or refuse. If the statements be false, and if the goal be worthless, it is of the highest importance that the former should be refuted and the latter discredited. But if the diagnosis be correct and the aim worthy, it is at least of equal importance that this should be generally recognized: for we cannot wish to perpetuate as the basis of our sociology a view of life that is demonstrably false or a purpose demonstrably contrary to our conception of the good. “This book is designed, therefore, not as an addition to our already overburdened libraries of information, but as a definite contribution to the philosophy of life.”—Ananada K. Coomaraswamy

Calling Humanity written by Jose Trigueirinho Netto and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

This book provides essential information for those seeking to understand this time of planetary emergency The chapters have been taken from different volumes of the extensive writings of Jose Trigueirinho Netto, a well-known and highly regarded Brazilian spiritual teacher, and offer an introduction to the profound wisdom made available by him. This information can serve as a doorway through which we may enter in order to receive the new evolutionary impulses that are being poured down upon humanity in these times. Past wisdom teachers have implied that there is an expanded reality which humanity is presently approaching and which is available to those who look within. Trigueirinho is viewed by many as a messenger of this expanded reality and this book of selections presents us with many of its essential features for our review. This includes the nature of contract with extra- and intra-terrestrials, inner healing and human transformation, the increasing presence on earth of energies associated with the divine feminine, the possibility of contact with subtle inner realities, and the process of soul-transmutation (including the author's own experience of this phenomenon). Also discussed is the activation of sacred energy centers on earth, called 'Planetary Centers', which serve as channels for higher energies, along with the author's description of his experiences during a visit to one of them. Trigueirinho walks deftly along the boundary between inner and outer realities and presents us with profound insights based on his contacts with being from other levels who define the inner workings of heavenly space and who offer important information for human evolution and those who wish to serve it. This volume provides an important introduction to his work and shares teachings that will assist us in entering the new age that is about to dawn.
