If only I could spend more time at home and (much) less time at work. If only I knew what to do to make that change. If only I could achieve that elusive goal of work-life balance. In the spare moments of calm and quiet before your head hits the pillow, do thoughts like these cross your mind? Do you long to be at home when you're working overtime for the eighth week in a row? Does your work pull you away from quality time with your spouse or kids, even when you're home? When you're home, are you really there? Forty percent of Americans work more than fifty hours per week. And many fall into the trap of working longer so that we might be able to provide more for our families. But is sacrificing our one finite resource-time-worth the cost? In Search of Work-Life Balance presents a biblically based, practical, and achievable way forward for anyone who's wrestling to find a functional balance between the necessity of work and the desire to spend time with those who matter the most.

PrologueThis book is intended to serve you as a decision-making aid, primarily to create a new consciousness or to expand on what already exists. It will also show you how to combine your strengths and your personality with your interests in order to find the ideal profession for you. In this book, I share with you, among other things, experiences that we as parents have had with our children, but also experiences that I have been able to gather during my long professional career. In the ideal case, this decision aid will make you more flexible in your thoughts. Moreover, it should encourage you to think more around corners and it should serve as a good signpost that helps you to look for and find a suitable job for you. No matter if you are looking for your first apprentice-ship or if you have already gained some work expe-rience, if you want to break out of unemployment or if you just want to change your job. Even if you should have other reasons and are looking for suit-able jobs for yourself or others, this decision maker can help you in your search. Briefly about my career: first apprenticeship at the end of the 80s - car mechanic (IHK), letter car-rier, warehouse manager, environmental protection officer, sales inspector, second apprenticeship in 2010 as computer scientist (IHK), database devel-oper, database administrator, sales representative IT security, overall responsibility for order process, distance learning to become a certified computer scientist (SGD), clerk, refugee assistance, system integrator, project manager, support, self-employed. Meanwhile I am in my mid-forties and as you can see from my career, I have already worked in sev-eral different professions and fields of activity. The individual fields of activity are again very different and range from simple tasks, project management, management positions with over 100+ employees, to distance learning and self-employment. From this colourful mix and many other aspects, I would like to share my experiences with you. Enjoy reading.

From the New York Times-bestselling author of Life Is in the Transitions comes a bold new road map for finding meaning and purpose at work, based on insights drawn from hundreds of life stories of Americans from all backgrounds and vocations When Bruce Feiler completed his last book, which introduced readers to his idea of the “nonlinear life,” he realized that the greatest source of change in the world is work. Unprecedented numbers of Americans are quitting their jobs, rethinking their routines, breaking away from stifling preconceptions. The most stifling iron cage of all is the premise that each of us must have a “career.” We must follow a linear path of success, choosing a dream early, locking into a trajectory, always climbing higher, until we reach “the top.” Few ideas have created more misery, squandered more human potential, or ruined more relationships. Feiler has resolved to help all of us imagine better. The result is another milestone, an urgent cry for each of us to follow our own individual dream of success. The culmination of thousands of hours of interviews with an extraordinarily diverse and inspiring group of Americans, The Search assembles a mosaic of stories truly representative of our time. From this collection, Feiler has distilled a powerful new vision for how to think about work—and how to live accordingly. He shows that our lives are upended by a stream of “workquakes” on average every two-and-a-half years. Sure, some people set a goal and stick with it, but Feiler produces overwhelming evidence that far more of us revise our passions, change our directions, rethink our priorities. Feeling lost and ashamed, we resent being forced to grab someone else’s gold ring. The time has come to melt down those rings, and this book brings the heat. After dismantling “the three lies about work,” Feiler lays out the one truth: that each of us must write our own story. Using the fundamentals of any good narrative, Feiler introduces the six questions to ask in times of change—Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How—that allow us to perform a meaning audit, tapping into our truest selves and our deepest hopes to create the meaning we crave. Both timely and timeless, this book arrives as the world questions our basic assumptions about work—and shows that the answers involve not following another supposed expert, but giving yourself to yourself, learning to dial into your own inner voice and turning the volume all the way up.
