The book starts by analyzing the problem of how we can see so well despite what, to an engineer, might seem like horrendous defects of our eyes. An explanation is provided by a new way of thinking about seeing, the "sensorimotor" approach. In the second part of the book the sensorimotor approach is extended to all sensory experience. It is used to elucidate an outstanding mystery of consciousness, namely why, unlike today's robots, humans actually can feel things. The approach makes predictions and opens research avenues, among them the phenomena of change blindness, sensory substitution, and "looked but failed to see", as well as results on color naming and color perception and the localisation of touch on the body.

The aim of the Watching series is to draw attention to some of the very interesting items around us, things that perhaps we don't notice as much as we might. The first was Bridge Watching, and when this was put ''on the Net'' it produced, to the surprise of the author, such a pleasant flood of e-mail that another was written, called Water Watching. This, too, was kindly received. So it was tempting to continue with the theme. Many people know very little about bells, and some, sadly, know nothing at all. This is a pity for, large or little, they can be engaging objects. You might think that ''Bell Hearing'' might be a better title; but looking at bells has its own attraction, too. In England, church bells are well known, because of the sounds they make, though many people have not seen the bells themselves. Doorbells, too, are familiar items in many houses, but are rarely regarded with any particular interest. Some of these are not what is popularly imagined as bell-shaped, and are more properly chimes. Then there are bicycle bells, cowbells, and many other kinds, too, all well worth a thought. Things that are free are doubly attractive. It costs nothing to enjoy the pleasures of getting to know these interesting objects. Learning a little about the fascinating qualities of bells in general can be an enjoyable occupation, and can start a lively curiosity about them. The more you know about them, the more interesting they become.

From a perfect existence to a traumatic start, Bell began her early years in an environment that nurtured and welcomed her God-given gifts. Suddenly, she is thrust into a harsh and relentless world in a life and death battle for her soul. Questioning her identity, Bell is in a fight with forces within and spiritual forces that aim to stop her for using her gifts and block her from ever realizing her purpose. Life as she knows it crumbles leading her to believe that she is all alone and has no reason to live. Then hope comes knocking at her door reintroducing her to the 'garden. Bell's supernatural battle will test and renew her faith. She will be reminded of her self-value, re-opening her spiritual eye and revealing that the power to overcome and 'so shine' has always been within her. Bell's powerful gifts will provoke the worshipper and creator in us to access new dimensions in 'Spirit and Truth' that came with the promise that the believer was given by being 'so loved' by God.
