The focus of this research is to further understand the issues surrounding urban design and planning of urban public open space in Addis Ababa, as Addis is one of the largest cities in Africa, with a huge concentration of people and resources, has suffered from many social and environmental problems. Among these problems, Shortage of quality & Standard public open spaces threaten the microclimate situations, health of the citizens and aesthetic quality of the city. Since 1998, inner city redevelopment policy/LDP/ has gradually become a relevant approach for addressing the ever pressing problems in Addis Ababa. Together with the emergence of new peripheries, inner-city areas affected by deterioration due to the failure of programs in relation to open spaces provisions in the past decades have been the object of study and actions. Thus, this research concludes that the Redevelopment/LDP/ programs are not playing crucial role in building public open spaces in the study areas as per the intended expectation. Finally, this research recommends "Start Planning and Design of Built Environment (areas supposed for redevelopment /LDP/) with Public Open Spaces" so as to have quanity, quality

Following the restructuring process which swept away the traditional manufacturing economy of the inner city 25 years ago, new industries are transforming these former post-industrial landscapes. These creative, technology-intensive industries include Internet services, computer graphics and imaging, and video game production. The development dynamics of these new sectors are volatile in comparison with those of the classic ‘Industrial City’. But these new industries highlight the unique role of the inner city in facilitating creative processes, innovation and social change. This book addresses the critical intersections between process and place which underpin the formation of creative enterprises in the emergent industrial districts of the ‘new inner city’. The studies demonstrate the global reach of development and innovation across these cities and sites, marked by clustering, rapid firm turnover, and interdependency between production and consumption activity. The evocative case studies, brought to life by interviews, sequential mapping exercises, media narratives, and photography, also disclose the importance of local factors (including urban scale, built form, property markets and policy) which shape both the specific industrial structures and socio-economic impacts. The literature about redevelopment and the displacement of inner-city residents is plentiful. What has been missing from legal scholarship's discourse about displaced communities, however, is a meaningful focus on the role and impact of the public-private relationship in inner-city redevelopment. This article examines the deal making process of inner-city redevelopment projects and its deficient mechanisms for community participation. It particularly critiques the structure and scope of open meetings acts as these acts apply to redevelopment projects sponsored by cities partnering with quasi-public developers. This article argues that an anti-public norm dominates inner-city redevelopment deal making and that, as a result, open meetings acts fail particularly in the context of inner-city redevelopment due to the informality of deal making. To counteract this norm, the article advocates for increased formality in inner-city redevelopment through revisions to state open meeting laws and the implementation of formal mechanisms of community participation by local government.
