In contrast to most migration studies that focus on specific “foreigner” groups in Germany, this study simultaneously compares and contrasts the legal, political, social, and economic opportunity structures facing diverse categories of the ethnic minorities who have settled in the country since the 1950s. It reveals the contradictory, and usually self-defeating, nature of German policies intended to keep “migrants” out—allegedly in order to preserve a German Leitkultur (with which very few of its own citizens still identify). The main barriers to effective integration—and socioeconomic revitalization in general—sooner lie in the country’s obsolete labor market regulations and bureaucratic procedures. Drawing on local case studies, personal interviews, and national surveys, the author describes “the human faces” behind official citizenship and integration practices in Germany, and in doing so demonstrates that average citizens are much more multi-cultural than they realize.

The arrival of over one million migrants and asylum seekers in Germany in 2015 has created a growing sense of urgency for integration policies. While the results of current measures will not be visible immediately, Germany has already gained experience from past periods of immigration that it can now look to, and that could also provide insight for other countries. Germany is neither perfect, nor is it hopeless. This paper suggests that Germany has already drawn valuable lessons from its own immigration experience, in particular in terms of labor market integration. We examine the state of integration measures in four core areas: 1) the labor market, 2) education, 3) urban planning, and 4) diversity, inclusion and the receiving society. Lessons in education and urban planning are harder to implement. However, it also points to persistent challenges that Germany must continue to address, such as social and structural discrimination for people with migrant family background, as well as policies geared toward actively managing diversity and inclusion, and addressing the receiving society. Here, Germany is at the beginning of a learning process that will become increasingly important as German society continues to be more ethnically and culturally diverse, and increasingly polarized politically speaking. Learning from such lessons will help create the necessary building blocks for the new migration realities ahead in many countries.

The end of World War II led to one of the most significant forced population transfers in history: the expulsion of over 12 million ethnic Germans from Central and Eastern Europe between 1945 and 1950 and the subsequent emigration of another four million in the second half of the twentieth century. Although unprecedented in its magnitude, conventional wisdom has it that the integration of refugees, expellees, and Aussiedler was a largely successful process in postwar Germany. While the achievements of the integration process are acknowledged, the volume also examines the difficulties encountered by ethnic Germans in the Federal Republic and analyses the shortcomings of dealing with this particular phenomenon of mass migration and its consequences.

Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Politics - General and Theories of International Politics, grade: 1,0 / 74, , course: Global Economic Policy Analysis, language: English, abstract: How is Germany handling the large number of immigrants in terms of integration? What are strengths and weaknesses of the German integration system? What must be improved? Did the state fail? The thesis statement of this essay is that the integration system of Germany is rather a failure than a success story. First, the Race Relation Cycles by Park will be explained. Afterwards, the current integration system in Germany will be critically analysed followed by an outline of its consequences. Next, the status quo of Germany’s integration system will be evaluated. Finally, the author will state his advice for policy makers. Migration and integration are challenges which are posed to national states through globalisation. While these aren’t new international phenomena, their extent is new. 2017’s refugee population globally was the highest since World War Two. "Wir schaffen das" (we make it) said Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015, referring to the refugee crisis in Germany. Later, this sentence turned into a provocation since large parts of the German population accused her of denying reality. Immigration and integration are still present topics in German politics.

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Sociology - Religion, grade: 1,7, University of Erfurt, course: Internationale Summer school: Muslime im Westen, language: English, abstract: In the following I will try to illustrate some of the specific problems of integration of Muslims and will raise up some questions for discussion. But before that, I will spend some words in general. The main problem why we haven’t face the integration as it came up was a wrong understanding in the Muslim people who came here. Currently there live 3.2 million Muslims in Germany mainly from turkey. They came here in the 60 ́s as guest workers. We have treated them as guests, we were not familiar with their religion, we have not try to integrate them in our society, we have let them do in the believe that they are just guests and that they will go back in their home countries sooner or later. And we had also prejudices against Muslims that were even written down in for example a schoolbook from the late 70 ́s. Here is a quotation about the Islam from the book: “Allah is a violent and tyrannic god. Mohammed is uniquely tied to the evil: as a messenger of a violent god, he is violent himself, and so is Islamic man – violent, malicious, and driven by his instincts.” This quotation is hostile, ignorant, full of prejudices and wrong, but it was taught so in school and together with the public opinion it created frontiers and mistrust. Nowadays we see that most of the people stay here and the first and second generation may feel that Germany is more there home as the country their parents or grandparents came from. Now we have the notion that these people are here and we must integrate them in our society without creating new frontiers and removing old prejudices. The main task – the first step - of the integration is that we must encourage the Muslims here to learn our language. At 9th of August this year there was a great fire in a residential house in Berlin. Inhabitants mainly from Arabic countries couldn’t understand what the fire fighters told them. They said they should stay in their flats and don’t run in the hall, because of the fire and the smoke. They didn’t understand these instructions so 8 people run out in their deaths. Surely a very drastically example of misunderstanding.
