Textual information in the form of digital documents quickly accumulates to create huge amounts of data. The majority of these documents are unstructured: it is unrestricted text and has not been organized into traditional databases. Processing documents is therefore a perfunctory task, mostly due to a lack of standards. It has thus become extremely difficult to implement automatic text analysis tasks. Automatic Text Summarization (ATS), by condensing the text while maintaining relevant information, can help to process this ever-increasing, difficult-to-handle, mass of information. This book examines the motivations and different algorithms for ATS. The author presents the recent state of the art before describing the main problems of ATS, as well as the difficulties and solutions provided by the community. The book provides recent advances in ATS, as well as current applications and trends. The approaches are statistical, linguistic and symbolic. Several examples are also included in order to clarify the theoretical concepts.

Nas interações sociais e econômicas da atualidade, nota-se com crescente frequência a presença de uma nova categoria de ente: o agente artificial. Ele é responsável pela compra e venda de mercadorias online, por determinar a elegibilidade para benefícios como a obtenção de crédito ou de assistência médica, por negociações em bolsas de valores, dentre outras aplicações cotidianas. Até o momento, a grande maioria desses agentes não possui uma característica essencial: a autonomia para agir independentemente do controle humano. Eles são, no máximo, semiautônomos, mas pesquisas no campo da inteligência artificial indicam que este não será o caso em um futuro próximo. Na medida em que agentes artificiais se tornem capazes de agir de maneira autônoma, independentemente de orientações humanas diretas, e baseando-se nas informações por eles próprios adquiridas e analisadas, será possível que eles realizem ações não antecipadas por seres humanos. Como resultado, surgem questionamentos acerca do tratamento jurídico a ser conferido a estes agentes autônomos de inteligência artificial, sobretudo na hipótese de ocorrência de danos. Nesse contexto, o presente livro aborda a possibilidade de alteração do status jurídico desses agentes artificiais para o de pessoas, em oposição a de meros objetos; os regimes de responsabilidade civil aplicáveis para os casos em que eles venham a causar danos; e a hipótese de criação de um sistema de seguros para arcar com eventuais compensações

The book is not only aimed at IT specialists, but is meant for a wider audience that needs to process big sets of text documents and has basic knowledge of the subject, e.g. e-mail service providers, online shoppers, librarians, etc. The book starts with an introduction to text-based natural language data processing and its goals and problems. It focuses on machine learning, presenting various algorithms with their use and possibilities, and reviews the positives and negatives. Beginning with the initial data pre-processing, a reader can follow the steps provided in the R-language including the subsuming of various available plug-ins into the resulting software tool. A big advantage is that R also contains many libraries implementing machine learning algorithms, so a reader can concentrate on the principal target without the need to implement the details of the algorithms her- or himself. To make sense of the results, the book also provides explanations of the algorithms, which supports the final evaluation and interpretation of the results. The examples are demonstrated using realworld data from commonly accessible Internet sources.
