Un recorrido por Asturias permite apreciar la amplitud de un fenómino ya conocido pero tal vez poco divulgado: el del aporte de los indianos a la instrucción pública de la región, a través de la fundación, contrucción y sostenimiento de muchas escuelas desde finales del XIX hasta la década de 1930. Este volumen sigue la estela de otros trabajos y pretende dar a conocer la amplitud y calado de este hecho; la variedad de ejemplos en lo formal, espacial y tipológico; las personas y sociedades que promovieron las escuelas, y el devenir, hasta el estado actual, de estos centros. En él se recoge la implantación y expansión de las escuelas de pormoción indiana en Asturais desde 1870 hasta mediado el siglo XIX, abordando no sólo los aspectos socioculturales, sino también los pedagoógicos y arquitectónicos de ste patrimonio, que se recopila en un sucineto censo de tales estableicmientos, con datos históricos y fotografías actuales. Específicamente, se aborda el caso del concejo de Llanes, uno de los más ricos e interesantes dentro del panorama del Principado, analizando desde una perspectiva histórica y patrimonial este conjunto, en el que destaca el singular ejemplo de las escuelas de Vidiago, Riego y Puertas, recientemente rehabilitadas y recuperadas para el uso cultural y docente, lo que sirve de pretexto a sus autores para incluir una reflexión sobre la experiencia rehabilitadora del patrimonio arquitectónico reigonal.
