Democracia con motivos ofrece razones, desde el positivismo político, para preferir y defender la democracia sobre otros métodos de decisión colectiva. El primer motivo se encuentra en la ausencia de criterios objetivos que permitan determinar qué opción es la correcta de entre las distintas en pugna en situaciones de profundo desacuerdo político-moral y necesaria acción común. Por otro lado, la apuesta por el respeto a la igual libertad política y a la tolerancia, así como cierta actitud consistente en ponerse en el lugar del otro brindan el soporte valorativo necesario para preferir la democracia sobre otras formas de gobierno. Cierto es, no obstante, que la elección de tales valores se relaciona en gran medida con la personalidad de cada individuo y que ésta o la naturaleza humana lleven la impronta del interés propio como la principal, si no la única, motivación práctica de los seres humanos. En esos casos, el compromiso por una coexistencia pacífica requiere de una educación moral y política de la tolerancia como comprensión hacia las personas con cuyas creencias no estamos de acuerdo. Esta forma robusta de respeto a los derechos de los individuos y a sus decisiones funciona, finalmente, como un motivo más para la democracia. Dicho respeto a los derechos de las personas, por último, permite rechazar un sistema rígido de protección constitucional como el que está actualmente en boga, pues, paradójicamente, tal sistema conlleva el desprecio a la autonomía de los individuos. Todos estos planteamientos conectan de manera pragmática la democracia con el positivismo, el relativismo y el liberalismo político, así como con los aportes provenientes de la psicología. Tales nexos pueden enmendarse y las razones en favor de esta forma de gobierno cambiarse. Sin embargo, lo relevante es defender la democracia con motivos.

In the "Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right,” the young Marx elliptically alludes to a "true democracy" whose advent would go hand in hand with the disappearance of the state. Miguel Abensour’s rigorous interpretation of this seminal text reveals an “unknown Marx” who undermines the identification of democracy with the state and defends a historically occluded form of politics. True democracy does not entail the political and economic power of the state, but it does not dream of a post-political society either. On the contrary, the battle of democracy is waged by a demos that invents a public sphere of permanent struggles, a politics that counters political bureaucracy and representation. Democracy is "won" by a people forewarned that any dissolution of the political realm in its independence, any subordination to the state, is tantamount to annihilating the site for gaining and regaining a genuinely human existence. In this explicitly heterodox reading of Marx, Miguel Abensour proposes a theory of "insurgent" democracy that makes political liberty synonymous with a living critique of domination.
