La famine constitue aujourd'hui une tragédie médiatisée. Notamment, en Afrique, les pays de la ceinture saharo-sahélienne, de l'Atlantique à la mer Rouge, ont vécu, de 1968 à 1985, deux sécheresses aiguës ayant entraîné la famine. Cette catastrophe a plus particulièrement affecté les populations de pasteurs nomades. Par deux fois, les troupeaux ont été décimés, les nomades minés par la dénutrition se sont regroupés sous des abris de fortune, à la périphérie des villes et en bordure des axes routiers. Dépossédés de leur richesse et de leur puissance passée, le cheptel, les lourds bijoux des femmes, l'épée ou le poignard arboré par les hommes, ils sont démunis de tout, " clochardisés ". Cette ultime stratégie de repli du nomade a entraîné une forme de sédentarisation forcée qui a accentué le mouvement d'exode rural. Dès lors, la subsistance des nomades dépend de l'assistance familiale et de l'aide internationale, ainsi que de l'insertion dans des activités hors élevage. L'aide alimentaire et la logistique des organisations humanitaires induisent des effets pervers, tels que la chute de la production locale, l'abandon de pratiques traditionnelles et une dépendance, notamment liée aux changements d'habitudes alimentaires. Au-delà, le secteur informel (petite production marchande, micro-commerce et autres activités de services) se révèle parfaitement articulé à l'économie de l'aide qui polarise d'ores et déjà l'essentiel du tissu socio-économique. Si cette dernière contribue à la subsistance à court terme, le secteur informel constitue, quant à lui, un " sas d'adaptation " et la ville représente le lieu par excellence du changement social.

It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field.
