Zweig’s first healer, Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), was a German physician who introduced “animal magnetism” to the world. Viewed by many as a charlatan, he died an outcast before he could properly understand and explain his discovery. Zweig’s second healer, Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), was a New England matron who found her vocation only in middle age. She established Christian Science, an American Protestant system of religious practice that rejects medical intervention, when she was almost 60. Zweig’s third healer, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), was the Viennese Jewish physician who founded psychoanalysis. Zweig, who knew Freud and delivered a eulogy at his funeral, describes Freud’s then-new ideas with the insight of an artist who lived in the same time and place. Ein solches ist das »Unheimliche«. Kein Zweifel, daß es zum Schreckhaften, Angst-und Grauenerregenden gehört, und ebenso sicher ist es, daß dies Wort nicht immer in einem scharf zu bestimmenden Sinne gebraucht wird, so daß es eben meist mit dem Angsterregenden überhaupt zusammenfällt. Aber man darf doch erwarten, daß ein besonderer Kern vorhanden ist, der die Verwendung eines besonderen Begriffswortes rechtfertigt." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) war ein österreichischer Neurologe, Tiefenpsychologe, Kulturtheoretiker und Religionskritiker. Als Begründer der Psychoanalyse erlangte er weltweite Bekanntheit. Freud gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Denker des 20. Jahrhunderts; seine Theorien und Methoden werden bis heute viel diskutiert.

This book proposes a fresh approach to sociological analysis and, in particular, to the analysis of scientific culture. It moves away from previous studies, which have tended to focus on scientists' actions and beliefs to show that analysis of scientific discourse can be productive and revealing. The book demonstrates that scientists produce varying accounts of their actions and beliefs in different social situations. Rather than attempting to extract one coherent interpretation from these diverse accounts, the study identifies two basic scientific repertoires and shows how scientists use them to create their discourse. This provides a point of departure for more complex analytical topics. Discourse analysis is applied to show how different degrees of 'consensus' can be ascribed to the same group of scientists at a given moment in time through the application of standard interpretive techniques. Finally, discourse analysis is used to explore scientists' humour, a neglected topic that is shown to provide important insights into the normally hidden interpretive regularities which underlie the cultural diversity of science.
