Per i lettori che conoscono e amano Bruce Chatwin "Anatomia dell’irrequietezza" diventerà una sorta di breviario, per quelli che hanno meno familiarità con l’opera del grande vagabondo sarà un’introduzione alle sue esperienze e alle sue idee, un viaggio con Chatwin alla scoperta di Chatwin. Forse mai come in certe parti di questo libro – soprattutto nelle notizie autobiografiche e nella memorabile lettera al suo editore Tom Maschler – Chatwin è stato prossimo a rivelare che cosa stava al fondo del suo essere e della sua inquietudine di uccello migratore, devoto per istinto alla «alternativa nomade». Ma perché il nomadismo può proporsi come alternativa alla cosiddetta civiltà? Le risposte si delineano di pagina in pagina attraverso scritti che abbracciano vent’anni di una vita breve, intensa, errabonda, dal 1968 al 1987, e rispecchiano le varie incarnazioni di Chatwin: esperto d’arte e archeologo, giornalista, esploratore e narratore. Sono racconti brevi, storie e schizzi di viaggio (dall’amata Patagonia alla Toscana, dall’Africa a Capri), ritratti (Konrad Lorenz, Axel Munthe, Curzio Malaparte); e anche abbozzi di un libro-sogno sul nomadismo al quale Chatwin lavorò a più riprese e che poi abbandonò ritenendolo «impubblicabile». Doveva essere, quel libro, un atto di fede: «Il nomade rinuncia; medita in solitudine; abbandona i rituali collettivi e non si cura dei procedimenti razionali dell’istruzione o della cultura. È un uomo di fede». E insieme un’autoanalisi, che gli permettesse di rispondere a una domanda elementare: «Perché divento irrequieto dopo un mese nello stesso posto, insopportabile dopo due?». Anatomia dell’irrequietezza viene pubblicato in Inghilterra simultaneamente all’edizione italiana (1996).
