American Nations written by Colin Woodard and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-29 with History categories.

An illuminating history of North America's eleven rival cultural regions that explodes the red state-blue state myth. North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an “American” or “Canadian” culture, but rather into one of the eleven distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, and the rivalries and alliances between its component nations, which conform to neither state nor international boundaries. He illustrates and explains why “American” values vary sharply from one region to another. Woodard (author of American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good) reveals how intranational differences have played a pivotal role at every point in the continent's history, from the American Revolution and the Civil War to the tumultuous sixties and the "blue county/red county" maps of recent presidential elections. American Nations is a revolutionary and revelatory take on America's myriad identities and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and are molding our future.

Takaki traces the economic and political history of Indians, African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America, with considerable attention given to instances and consequences of racism. The narrative is laced with short quotations, cameos of personal experiences, and excerpts from folk music and literature. Well-known occurrences, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the Trail of Tears, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Japanese internment are included. Students may be surprised by some of the revelations, but will recognize a constant thread of rampant racism. The author concludes with a summary of today's changing economic climate and offers Rodney King's challenge to all of us to try to get along. Readers will find this overview to be an accessible, cogent jumping-off place for American history and political science plus a guide to the myriad other sources identified in the notes.

The Right Nation written by John Micklethwait and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Conservatism categories.

The Right Nation is the definitive portrait of the America that few outsiders understand: the America that votes for George Bush, that supports the death penalty and gun rights, that believes in minimal government and long prison sentences, that pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol. America, argue John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, award winning journalists at The Economist, has always been a conservative country; but over the past 50 years it has built up a radical conservative movement unlike any other country. The authors tell the story of how these radicals took over the Republican Party, and they deconstruct the Bush White House, examining the many influences from neo-conservatism to sun belt entrepreneurialism. This quest takes the authors from young churchgoers in Colorado Springs to gay gun clubs in Massachusetts to black supporters of school vouchers in Milwaukee. And they drive to the heart of a question that is relevant to us all: why does America seem so different?

Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Kultur und Landeskunde, Note: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: I grew up on the wracks of soviet society, in times when socialist ideology was no more able to resist new movements in the world and communist ideals burst like a soapbubble. The time came to become different after a long and disruptive period during which there were no individuals, but a soviet nation with the same opportunities as well as the same ideas and way of thinking. I purposely avoid the term “equal” because equality presupposes freedom of choice that failed in soviet regime. Any difference, no matter what sphere - is it a dress or a thought -, was considered to be malicious and alien. There was no other way of living, no bad or good, right or wrong. Just one way that should be accepted as the only one possible. At that time I never thought of being different. I was happy having the same dress as my neighbours and doing the same things during summer holidays as my class-mates though we were at different places. Those who somehow differed were bad foreigners. But they were very rare guests. And we were happy about it as well. Then, there were Americans who were for me more than different, like an alien from different planet. Actually they were taboo. Like two different poles, two countries, one of which with the freedom of choice and the other without any choices at all.

Examining democracies from a comparative perspective helps us better understand why politics—or, as Harold Lasswell famously said, "who gets what, when, and how"—differ among democracies. American Difference: A Guide to American Politics in Comparative Perspective takes the reader through different aspects of democracy—political culture, institutions, interest groups, political parties, and elections—and, unlike other works, explores how the United States is both different from and similar to other democracies. The fully updated Second Edition has been expanded to include several new chapters and discussion on civil liberties and civil rights, constitutional arrangements, elections and electoral institutions, and electoral behavior. This edition also includes data around the 2016 general election and 2018 midterm election.
