‘Prose this powerful could wake the dead’ – Observer Crossing a century of Eastern European history, The Lazarus Project is a profound exploration of alienation and the immigrant experience from Aleksandar Hemon, author of The World and All That It Holds. On 2 March 1908, Lazarus Averbuch, a young Russian Jewish immigrant to Chicago, tried to deliver a letter to the city’s Chief of Police. He was shot dead. After the shooting, it was claimed he was an anarchist assassin and an agent of foreign operatives who wanted to bring the United States to its knees. His sister, Olga, was left alone and bereft in a city seething with tension. A century later, two friends become obsessed with the truth about Lazarus and decide to travel to his birthplace. As the stories intertwine, a world emerges in which everything – and nothing – has changed . . . ‘This is easily Hemon’s best work to date, an intricately tessellated portrait of flight, emigration, and the meaning of home’ – Evening Standard

Compartment Syndrome written by Cyril Mauffrey and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-02 with Medical categories.

Compartment syndrome is a complex physiologic process with significant potential harm, and though an important clinical problem, the basic science and research surrounding this entity remains poorly understood. This unique open access book fills the gap in the knowledge of compartment syndrome, re-evaluating the current state of the art on this condition. The current clinical diagnostic criteria are presented, as well as the multiple dilemmas facing the surgeon. Pathophysiology, ischemic thresholds and pressure management techniques and limitations are discussed in detail. The main surgical management strategy, fasciotomy, is then described for both the upper and lower extremities, along with wound care. Compartment syndrome due to patient positioning, in children and polytrauma patients, and unusual presentations are likewise covered. Novel diagnosis and prevention strategies, as well as common misconceptions and legal ramifications stemming from compartment syndrome, round out the presentation. Unique and timely, Compartment Syndrome: A Guide to Diagnosis and Management will be indispensable for orthopedic and trauma surgeons confronted with this common yet challenging medical condition.

Fundamentals Of The Physical Theory Of Diffraction written by Pyotr Ya. Ufimtsev and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-09 with Science categories.

This book is the first complete and comprehensive description of the modern Physical Theory of Diffraction (PTD) based on the concept of elementary edge waves (EEWs). The theory is demonstrated with the example of the diffraction of acoustic and electromagnetic waves at perfectly reflecting objects. The derived analytic expressions clearly explain the physical structure of the scattered field and describe in detail all of the reflected and diffracted rays and beams, as well as the fields in the vicinity of caustics and foci. Shadow radiation, a new fundamental component of the field, is introduced and proven to contain half of the total scattered power.

Real Time Coastal Observing Systems For Marine Ecosystem Dynamics And Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and has been published by UNESCO this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-05 with Nature categories.

The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

Stochastic Analysis In Discrete And Continuous Settings written by Nicolas Privault and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-14 with Mathematics categories.

This monograph is an introduction to some aspects of stochastic analysis in the framework of normal martingales, in both discrete and continuous time. The text is mostly self-contained, except for Section 5.7 that requires some background in geometry, and should be accessible to graduate students and researchers having already received a basic training in probability. Prereq- sites are mostly limited to a knowledge of measure theory and probability, namely?-algebras,expectations,andconditionalexpectations.Ashortint- duction to stochastic calculus for continuous and jump processes is given in Chapter 2 using normal martingales, whose predictable quadratic variation is the Lebesgue measure. There already exists several books devoted to stochastic analysis for c- tinuous di?usion processes on Gaussian and Wiener spaces, cf. e.g. [51], [63], [65], [72], [83], [84], [92], [128], [134], [143], [146], [147]. The particular f- ture of this text is to simultaneously consider continuous processes and jump processes in the uni?ed framework of normal martingales.

This book covers all the major aspects associated with pathophysiological development of cardiac arrhythmias (covering enhanced or suppressed automaticity, triggered activity, or re-entry), from basic concepts through disease association, limitations of current pharmacotherapy and implant therapies and on-going trials and analysis of new biomarkers based on current knowledge of cellular interaction and signalling. The book describes novel and state-of-the-art methods for differentiating between the major types of arrhythmia, structural abnormalities and current practice guidelines and determination of risk stratification associated with sudden cardiac death. A particular focus is on arrhythmias associated with atrial fibrillation and includes details of associations with cardiac disease, current detection, analysis and imaging and future perspectives.

Networking Infrastructure for Pervasive Computing: Enabling Technologies & Systems is a comprehensive guide to tomorrow's world of ubiquitous computing where users can access and manipulate information from everywhere at all times. The emphasis is on networking, systems and standards rather than detailed physical implementation. Addressed are many technical obstacles, such as, connectivity, levels of service, performance, and reliability and fairness. The authors also describe the existing enabling off-the-shelf technologies and its underlying infrastructure known as pervasive networking (PervNet). PervNet ties different sets of smart nodes together enabling them to communicate with each other to provide pervasive computing services to users. Throughout the book, important issues related to scalability, transparency, security, energy management, QoS provisioning, fault tolerance, and disconnected operations are discussed. This work provides a research and development perspective to the field of PervNet and will serve as an essential reference for network designers, operators and developers.

Crying Out For Change written by Deepa Narayan-Parker and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Social Science categories.

A multi-country research initiative to understand poverty from the eyes of the poor, the Voices of the Poor project was undertaken to inform the World Bank's activities and the upcoming World Development Report 2000/01. The research findings are being published in three books: "Can Anyone Hear Us?" gathers the voices of over 40,000 poor women and men in 50 countries from the World Bank's participatory poverty assessments (Deepa Narayan, Raj Patel, Kai Schafft, Anne Rademacher, and Sarah Koch-Schulte, authors). "Crying Out for Change" pulls together new field work conducted in 1999 in 23 countries (Deepa Narayan, Robert Chambers, Meera Shah, and Patti Petesch, authors). "From Many Lands" offers regional patterns and country case-studies (Deepa Narayan and Patti Petesch, editors). Voices of the Poor marks the first time such an exercise has been undertaken in so many developing countries and transition economies around the world. It provides a unique and detailed picture of the life of the poor and explains the constraints poor people face to escape from poverty in a way that more traditional survey techniques do not capture well. Each of the three volumes demonstrates the importance of voice and power in poor people's definition of poverty. Voices of the Poor concludes that we need to expand our conventional views of poverty which focus on income expenditure, education, and health to include measures of voice and empowerment.

Power And Knowledge In Southeast Asia written by Rommel A. Curaming and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-10 with Social Science categories.

Examining two state-sponsored history writing projects in Indonesia and the Philippines in the 1970s, this book illuminates the contents and contexts of the two projects and, more importantly, provides a nuanced characterization of the relationship between embodiments of power (state, dictators, government officials) and knowledge (intellectuals, historians, history). Known respectively as Sejarah Nasional Indonesia (SNI) and the Tadhana project, these projects were initiated by the Suharto and Marcos authoritarian regimes against the backdrop of rising and competing nationalisms, as well as the regimes’ efforts at political consolidation. The dialectics between actors and the politico-academic contexts determine whether scholarship and politics would clash, mutually support, or co-exist parallel with one another. Rather than one side manipulating or co-opting the other, this study shows the mutual need or partnership between scholars and political actors in these projects. This book proposes the need to embrace rather than deny or transcend the entwined power/knowledge if the idea is for scholarship to realize its truly progressive visions. Analyzing the dynamics of state–scholar relations in the two countries, the book will be of interest to academics in the fields on Southeast Asian history and politics, nationalism, historiography, intellectual history, postocolonial studies, cultural studies, and the sociology of knowledge.
