For many eighteenth-century European philosophers and writers, the beautiful soul was a symbol of enlightened humanity, carrying with it the possibility that aesthetic beauty and moral goodness would be fused in a new, indivisible unity. In the first book in English on the subject, Robert E. Norton follows the fortunes of this cultural icon, exploring the reasons for both its initial popularity and its subsequent decline as a cultural ideal during the Enlightenment. Tracing the emergence of the notion of moral beauty as it first appears in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Norton maintains that the attempt to combine the good and the beautiful was a response to the rise of secular authority. He draws on English, French, and German sources to show how writers in various intellectual traditions united philosophical, theological, and cultural themes in their elaboration of the beautiful soul. In Norton's view, this articulation of the beautiful soul was so persuasive that, by the second half of the eighteenth century, some version of moral beauty was introduced in nearly every discussion of morality. While writers such as Wieland, Rousseau, and Goethe employed the beautiful soul as a moral and aesthetic ideal in fiction, thinkers such as Kant explored it in philosophical works. Norton ends by demonstrating how the figure of the beautiful soul achieved its foremost expression in Schiller's writings and was definitively rejected in Hegel's Phenomenology.

Al-Ghazālī and the Idea of Moral Beauty rethinks the relationship between the good and the beautiful by considering the work of eleventh-century Muslim theologian Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111). A giant of Islamic intellectual history, al-Ghazālī is celebrated for his achievements in a wide range of disciplines. One of his greatest intellectual contributions lies in the sphere of ethics, where he presided over an ambitious attempt to integrate philosophical and scriptural ideas into a seamless ethical vision. The connection between ethics and aesthetics turns out to be a signature feature of this account. Virtue is one of the forms of beauty, and human beings are naturally disposed to respond to it with love. "Making Morals Matter: Moral Beauty, Embodiment, and Eighteenth-Century British Aesthetics" reorients the debates over the relation of ethics and aesthetics during the long eighteenth-century by tracing the emergence of "moral beauty" as a solution to Hobbesian moral relativism. Moral philosophers saw moral beauty as a solution to moral relativism because it represented morals not by verbal definitions, but rather by the sensuousness and the visibility of an individual's moral character. Indeed, a rigorous historical examination of texts by Lord Shaftesbury, Samuel Richardson, William Hogarth, Johann Caspar Lavater, and Mary Shelley reveal that moral beauty furnished an idiom for talking about a somatic and social experience where beauty and morality converged upon the surface of bodies. This embodied view of morality, I contend, recognizes the tactile moments of ethics and aesthetics, upending the assumption that the eighteenth-century understood these disciplines as divorced from anatomy. The importance of this claim cannot be overstated, for "moral beauty" is deeply rooted within patterns of thought we now label the "social sciences," patterns which manifest themselves within theories of physiognomy and Franz Joseph Gall's work on phrenology, and more recently, within the various iterations of social Darwinism and the early twentieth-century's flirtation with eugenics and racial profiling.
